Research shows that people who gossip the most have very high levels of anxiety. They are generally not particularly popular because they cannot be trusted. Spreading private information or negative judgments is painful to others and reflects poorly on the gossiper.
Why do people gossip?
• To feel superior
People who don’t feel good about themselves temporarily feel better when they judge others negatively.
• Out of boredom
When people can’t generate interesting discussions based on knowledge or ideas, gossip can rouse people’s interest.
• Out of envy
People gossip in order to hurt those whose popularity, talents, or lifestyle they envy.
• To feel like part of the group
People gossip to feel as though they belong to the group. Yet, when acceptance is based on being “in on a secret,” it is not based on a person’s identity, but on exclusion or maliciousness.
• For attention
A person gets to be the center of attention temporarily while divulging a piece of gossip. Yet, spreading gossip or rumors is like buying attention; it’s temporary and has little foundation.
• Out of anger or unhappiness
A person can derive a sense of retribution with disparaging remarks.
Any comments or is the above just rubbish and the reality is we, as human beings, just like talking about others?
We are social animals at the core. Gossip is how we set up lines of communication so that actual real info can be disseminated fast in an emergency. And we are all intensely curious creatures as well.
People full of anxiety are always wondering what people are saying about them so its their way of tapping into the local news line, and paradoxically they want to be talked about.
There's a quote that floats around about "....small minds talk about people.", but I find the stuff we do interesting, I always have.
Gossiping out of insecurity or anxiety isn't all bad. I'm fine with people trying to work out what's thought of them and why, it's when it's used to belittle people and secure a position within the group that I take issue with it.

I kind of agree, but think there is a difference between showing an interest in someone/thing and actually discussing them behind their backs.
As I have grown older, I have found that less and less importance or worry about how people view me, I am happy with myself as a person, and it really doesn't matter what others think. Of course, it is nice when I receive a compliment but I no longer look at an audience and think, "God I hope they like me". Ageing has some good points lol
I love people watching, it comes from spending hours waiting in airport lounges, I especially like sitting in a coffee shop, preferably outside, and watch the world go by, you can really see how some people interact and rightly or wrongly form opinions about them.
2intrigued: It's something people do for various reasons but the worst kind is malicious gossip imho.
Maybe we do all do it, but the increase in malicious gossip is almost as if it's a race to see who can make up the worst and most damaging rumour. Sad really
" Research shows that people who gossip the most have very high levels of anxiety.:
I would say that is caused by the fact that if they gossip, , they are aware that others are most likely doing the same about them, and that raises their anxiety levels.

I'm seeing it much the same way as crystal healing and rubbish like that. It allows dim-witted people to see themselves as some kind of authority figure. Its easy to test for yourself, next time somebody is gossiping about another person simply ask them an inane question about it- such as asking if the person was also using a yo yo at the time. Their beady little piggy eyes squint in apparent concentration as they recall/make up such intricate and irrelevant details.
rizlared: I just read this, found it rather informative.

interesting subject. an interesting article "Have You Heard? Gossip Turns Out to Serve a Purpose" might help.
Here how it goes: At a party, one of the divas was leaving early and her friend asked, why are you leaving early and didn't even say anything? She responded, don't worry, they will have plenty to talk about me when as soon as I leave.
Anyways gossippers, I never associate myself to anyone. It's a waste of time. But I do say how I feel to someone if appropriate. Otherwise life to me is short and try not to involve myself with it. All gossip to me are malicious.
I may write or discuss about things in life involving people that I read but I never start anything that deliberately hurts others.
According to the dictionary, it says: "casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as being true".

Yep, we're seeing more of this as time goes on and it truly is sad Riz.
