The NHS is designed to perform at a high average and never being the best is the price you pay for universal coverage. If you have or can get a hell of a lot of money from somewhere then of course the American system is better. The top 20% lose under the NHS and they gain from the American system and the 80% gain under the NHS and would lose in the American system.

Where socialism works at its best - like in the NHS - the bottom 80% gain and where it works terribly - like the USSR from the 1960s onwards - only the bottom 20% gain and the 80% lose.

Or the public school system. It's socialist to send all children to public schools although we tend not to call socialism socialism where socialism works due to low integrity reasons. Anyway universal education - the socialism we have everywhere - is another one of these socialisms where the 80% gain. The far-right hasn't become so right-wing that it seeks to ban public education as socialist - at least not yet!

Although we're heading that way. Through Trump we may see the beginning of the end for professional teaching and accredited curriculum and we'll see many charter schools run by the same people who run Fake News. Post-truth will inevtiably lead to post-education and perhaps youtube will become the chief educator in this post-intellect world.

I understand what you are saying but the money donated to Africa is just a mere drop in the ocean , compared to the billions of pounds pumped into the NHS annually.
We have the best Heath system in the world & a free one at that, so you can't expect the government to cough up on individual cases , such as the example you mentioned, without raising taxes to an already high level.
However, I do sympathise with the boy & can't imagine the stress & worry they are going through & hope with generous donations , he gets the treatment he needs.
thumbs up

Long story short if Trump and Trumpsters carry on the way they are we don't be sending kids to America to see specialist doctors and have life-saving operations you can't get anywhere else. Talent and technology is not going to concentrate in the company of them.

Understand what your saying Pete and it's a terrible situation for the boy and his family.
While I understand what your saying re foreign aid, and its a good argument, & not knowing the circumstances of this case, throwing money at every individual that needs healthcare would quickly lead to bankruptcy, its just not feasible imo. And while an argument could be made that this boy is deserving, I am pretty sure there are plenty of other cases equally deserving. Where does it start and stop ?
Am glad the boy got the care he needed.

Hope you're well and Happy Xmas mate.

P.S. On a side note, Getting ones news off the side of a bus and believing it, & voting accordingly, many, many experts agree will lead to less money going into NHS and Healthcare in the future.

Of course there will be those who can perform highly-skilled work whilst having a seriously primitive mind and wolrdview - Ben Carson for example. Ben Carson is a surgeon who would have us live by what autistic people said thousands of years ago(e.g. we must only eat fish on a friday), but in the whole these worldviews will destroy science and our technical ability to do anything.

The new religiousness of the post-truth world is a terrible thing for anyone living in the real world. You can hide online and you can wallow in the gutter, you can vote Trump, but sooner or later you will feel the results of what you believe. Actions and consequences are being re-coupled under the stress of necessity and this will have a revolutionary effect on the way people think. I keep referring to a maturing event in my writings and this cannot be far in the future.

Well, Tru,
it happens every day, eveywhere ...
Almost every single supermarket in Bulgaria has the donation boxes next to the till with pictures of kids and adults on.
And the health insurance is high enough, plus we have a special health department that decides kid's treatments abroad.
Before the forced democracy our health care was free, our university education was free too.
Every school had a dentist and a doctor.
Now we are blackmailed to choose private services or die waiting in the queue... mumbling

How is it possible that a "First world country" can not take care of its own people's care???
Why had the boy to be taken to other country?
Was not a proper surgeon(s) in your land to perform the surgery?

Your gov, as well as most gov spend lots of money in lots of things that are not always the best deal for the people that worked and generated that wealth. Sadly, all that money that goes overseas is not always for humanitarian reasons either.

I am glad the boy got the surgery he needed it and I hope everything goes well and he gets another chance to live and enjoy life.

christmas happy

My guess would be that the surgery was even more expensive in their country.
Some American people come here to have dental and medical care because it is less expensive than in your land.

Merry Christmas to you Felixis
