It's not a racial/ethnic disposition towards alcohol - although such a thing can indeed exist - or anything to do with the weather or the Church. There are complex cultural and historical factors behind Ireland's drink problem.

I would also argue that drinking along with all social problems in Ireland are exacerbated by brain drain. Many of the more aspirational and arguably functional Irish left and more of the idiots and jokesters will have stayed. It is a case where mass emigration leaves a country imbalanced and disturbed.

This happens both within and between nations. Where I was born is a lovable dump like Ireland as the smarter ones past and present moved to London or America. Towns get disembowled with masses torn from their communities as the old world burns in the fires of industry. Doing this to an entire country with the mass moving of peoples at global scale is the pinnacle of a material world that cares about nothing but economics and material self-interest. What happened to my hometown in more recent years is what's happened in Ireland for donkeys years and that's why we have so many stereotypes in common.

That is a false solution

Drowning one's sorrows does not work.

It just delays it until it rears its head even bigger.

Neither alcohol nor drugs should be taken to escape anything.

Otherwise known as 'Self Medicating' laugh

Alcohol is fine, and I enjoy a few pints myself.
It can and is abused though and that can lead to a whole world of pain for the person involved and in some cases their loved one's & others.

Google Professor Nutt, a guy asked to set up a Drugs task Force in the UK by Tony Blair.

After extensive research their findings were presented to Government and it was disbanded because their claims did not agree with the party line. Some 90 % (cant remember exact figure) of the Drug problems in the UK, the Committee found were caused by...........wait for it..................Alcohol.

There's drinking to forget your problems and there's drinking to be more outgoing. Escaping your own reality is fine, in moderation.

pedro27: Back in the throughout history instead of water the Irish drank homemade brew/beer, because the water was dirty and unfit to drink....so they drank brew and were merry, so I believe its in our genes/bloodline from our fore fathers in this land to handle it better than the rest of the world and enjoy it more too, past down to this current day...

Always thought of the Irish as being a bunch of beer sipping, superstitious , god fearing chancres, but generally, great fun. cheers

Saw a news brief on 2x scottish guys leaping out of a building and then proceeded to punch each other up, naked from the waist down.

As for the Irish my grand daddy, he got so drunk once he went to his shed and chopped his finger off!

No they are not.

Enhance the mood, yes.

But it is the worst form of escape from dark feelings.

They can only be worked on with a clear mind.

There is no cure at the end of a bottle.
