The nice thing about an elected form of representation government, IE the Dáil is that if they don't understand what they are voting for, we can get rid of them. Where as when the public votes they can claim ignorance for their stupidity!

Wait and watch what goes down in the UK and US, based on their stupidity before you think of following suit! The US is UK are both dealing with these disastrous votes.

I voted a big Yes for that . I hate to see Irelands Fishing go to hell, as well as not being allowed cut our own turf. Won't go on. Seeing Enda Kenny [albeit not for long] bow and scrape to the crouts. I believe we have a great Agricultural country here if we concentrate on Grass Beef and good quality, not factory, farming, indigenous products and we will always have connections with U.S with their companies coming in, not to mention our great record in the Equine world, some of the best horses in the world.

Plus Ireland [despite climate] is now a favourite spot to holiday, no fear of shootings or IS attacks.

Exactly how many people have been killed or injured...innocent people caught in the cross fire because of the drug war in Ireland over the past few yrs...?

Then go North (Ireland has 32 Counties)....Bomb attacks, shooting RUC...up and unders...knee cappings..

Ireland doesn't need ISIS...

Ireland has never really invested in its fisheries, whether in the EU or outside the EU.

This is a myth...the idea that agriculture is a big part of the Irish economy. It simply isn't.

goldengloss: we will always have connections with U.S with their companies coming in, not to mention our great record in the Equine world, some of the best horses in the world.

US companies are here for many reasons, one of the biggest is ease of access to EU markets. You leave the EU, they go...

Tourism is even a smaller part of the Irish economy than Agriculture.

A difficult one for me personally. As a libertarian I reject centralisation and big government, which means I reject the EU, but at the same time I really do not like the idea that Ireland could end dependent on US and UK handouts. Ireland once upon a time had an amazing culture. The Normans came and turned more Irish than the Irish themselves, but later centuries saw a systematic destruction of that culture, and the Irish identity suffered greatly.

I therefore am inclined to say stay with the EU for the time being, while Ireland spends effort on recovering, because I think Ireland still suffers the aftermath of previous centuries. When people say 'we should follow the UK', this reminds me of a dog following on the heels of its master. I don't like that picture one bit. Ireland deserve better. The EU is certainly not an ideal solution, but it may will offer Ireland an opportunity to find back to its own self. This is an island nation, far away from the mainland. Make use of what the EU currently has to offer, while same time working towards an Ireland that can truly stand on its own feet. The UK is the UK, Ireland is Ireland. The people here are amazing, and can look back on its own unique history, and it is a rich history - forget the centuries of oppression - Ireland once offered a rich culture. Recover it. Recover the identity - and then break from the EU, truly free, not another nation's dog, as I think Ireland would end if it makes that step too soon.

My view, could be all wrong, but that's how I feel about it.

The EU was a bad idea in the first place. Each country should be a country, with complete solventry. And not be a state. I think this is more important, now than ever.

We've had the occasional bright idea for a united but sovereign European State integration during the centuries but sadly, family relations and egos stopped it numerous times and even some Emperors gave up on trying. I would prefer to keep trying and hoping that all our peoples can one day be united so as to benefit us all or at the very least, the vast majority of our various peoples; all individual countries must have sovereignty without question or threat by any groups, we need our trading opportunities to be open to benefit as many as possible which should be rather simple and mutual defence from outside Europe . Open trade and sovereignty should have never been allowed to come under the control of any bureaucracy. That is why we have heads of states; our so called leaders and they have their obligations to have good ministers to see to open trading with each other is paramount.
Even de Gaule had some good ideas as to manage this and real concerns over a ruling bureaucracy that functions virtually independent of our governments. Dismantle the EU as it now stands , illuminate the controls over common sense and be done with politicians . Europe, not political parties should be paramount.

Even going further, the world, with humans realizing shared humanity, not power games of politicians and corporate capitalism, should rule. Utopia though, just as K-Pax crying but we must not give up hope either! head banger

Wonder what will happen with Scotland. Worry with many smaller nations is that wars among neighbours can break out, which a big union like the EU could be a tool against, but then there is the risk of Super States eventually waltzing over small bordering nations, or conflicts breaking out between Super States. There just does not seem to be a recipe against disaster yet, which is frightenly sad blues blues blues

Well, for what it's worth take some solace in that this ha hampered and in cases destroyed some branches of nearly all Royal families when one branch for their own selfish/ egotistical reasons put roadblocks in the path of a fully integrated Europe. Human nature will be as it is. Some of the Chancellors and various Ministers have submitted reasonable designs in the past and perhaps should be looked at again and subvert those who seek to gain from chaos in a united Europe based upon equity through both trade and monetary policy. What we collectively put into a common market, we should equally benefit which is still the age old adage of doing and serving the most to benefit the most with an equitable means of settling any shortfalls. Many good policies were drawn up from the founding of the old Common Market that were never implemented; even some as far back as Otto von Bismark. They all need a fresh revisit.
Scotland has a gambol to decide on; exit from ties to England before or after England actually does exit from the EU...Which will be easier or harder to accomplish but it must stand alone as a separate Nation regardless, as must Ireland and Wales. There can be unity in diversity. Patience and due diligence to solving problems should be paramount in adjusting to being Free from English rule and re asserting one's own national/ tribal heritages.

Back to K-Pax...I liked the film so much, I went out and got the 3 books he wrote on it. Nice; some portions really make you think. They are all thoroughly enjoyable....look up the titles by Gene Brewer and then hunt them down! Pros Lives in all of us...somewhere....laugh

It's not my decision, only from the irish.

But lately one hears a lot of proposals for EU-exit as if was a solution, the same that before were proposals for more EU integration.

I don't know if it's a long-term benefit.

Slowly. I am waiting for Malaga to get back from Paris ( I was there until yesterday for a week or so). When he hits Dublin, I am headung there for a long weekend.

We talked about your place (going Norrie in Cork), He doesn't know your neck of the woods and has good and bad stories told about it. He said, yrs ago his sister it was a great place, today the jury is out..

Basically we need a heads up. Could Cork handle a Belfast head and a Dublin head who are there for an Oliver Reed-Richard Harris type tear up?

Hmmm, well Oliver Reed lived in Cork and Harris was from nearby Limerick, so I think there is a history of heavy drinking which we survived.

I said no.
Even though poverty and loss of jobs sounds fun.
Since that is what will happen when we lose the European market.
A lot is going on at the moment with Ireland, Europe and Northern Ireland so why give our very efficient government more work on sorting this country out.
I suspect the country will be sent back to the 70's or 80's.
Most definitely not the 90's the time were I was born and when the country was not just stable but flourishing.
We were the Economic symbol of growth in Europe and developed the highest living standards in the world until the financial colapse of 2007.
We were the model that showed too rapid of economic growth produced problems as spending increased and saving decreased during the "Celtic Tiger".
This increased prices of all goods and services beyond the increase of wages also people took out loans they either thought they could afford or knew they couldn't and that destroyed the banking system as banks were so eager to make money and the government didn't place any structure for banks to follow.
I am sure you know what happened next.
Well if you all forgot we had to bail ourselves out twice to stay afloat their were ques of young and highly skilled people leaving this country because there were no jobs because no one had money and we're forced to do so.
The generation before me messed me over and I will find it hard or impossible to forgive them if they make us leave the EU because we will loose out on jobs free access of persons and products to the European market.
Not only will you be affecting people getting a good job here but you'd affect them abroad too as the job market will be harder to get into as freedom of movement will be taken away.
Also small Irish businesses are already suffering from Brexit why make it harder for them to trade globally?
Also Multinational companies are one of Ireland's biggest employers.
If you want tpo know how bad it could get just look at the UK it lost £60 billion on the first day it voted BREXIT and Ireland is a delicate economy.
I love my country so please don't hurt it.
So hear me out.
If you read all of this and kept an open mind I would be very grateful.
Just please be respectful if you don't agree with my opinion that is backed up by information and examples to real world problems that we could face of we go it alone.
Slán.
