‘Oui on peut!’ French voters want Obama to run for president

Posters of Barack Obama have popped up around Paris in what started as a joke by four friends calling for the former US president to run for the Élysée Palace
The organisers say they began plastering Obama posters around Paris because they were disenchanted with the homegrown candidates in France’s forthcoming presidential election.

.........But quite apart from the question of "will he run?" is the question of "could he even run?" And the answer is... no. France's requirements for presidential candidates are somewhat less stringent than the US's (18-year-olds can run in France, as opposed to 35 being the youngest age in the US), but they still require that their candidates be citizens.

So unless Obama has a plan to get himself French citizenship in the next few weeks (the process takes years), Obama17 and France are out of luck.

But weirdly enough, there is a recent former US president that could have run for president in France, up until 2006 at least. Thanks to a strange quirk in French law, Bill Clinton could easily gain citizenship due to his being born in Arkansas — which used to be part of French Louisiana.

This legal quirk was brought up by another "draft a US president" movement in France — in 2001, when Patrick Weil wrote to the New York Times asking Clinton to run for president in France:

Under Section 5 of Article 21-19 of the French civil code, citizens of states or territories over which France has ever exercised sovereignty or extended a mandate or protectorate may apply immediately for naturalization, without the normal five-year residency requirement... Of course, to become a citizen, you must fulfill a few legal requirements. You will need an official residence in France. (Paris is probably less expensive than Chappaqua.) And you will need to speak French. (Pas de probleme: Political French is filled with words that are familiar to you. ''Election.'' ''Globalisation.'' ''Recession.'') But you will be happy to know that France will not require you to renounce your American citizenship...........................laugh

Well let us talk Trump's address last night.

76% approval rating here in the US of A. Opps........the main comment of the address. PRESIDENTIAL

Even Van Jones........said that last night Donald Trump became President of the USA.laugh

The liberal media is falling like a house of cards.dancing

The DEMs Congressional leaders were the spoiled sports of the night. Leaving early and with seldom a clap to be heard from the minority party. comfort WE do feel for them.

Nancy Pelosi.....before the address.....said "President Trump has not done anything so far in his Presidency"
Well last night he did.cool The oratory was....eloquent. With a little hard impacting prods on the ISIS and illegal aliens.

DEM leadership actually hissed with President Trump announced a VOICE office in Homeland Security to hear the those that have had family killed and injured by criminal illegal aliens. Every American behind a TV said to themselves.....they like the murder more than the American family that has alien crime committed to it.

DEM leadership is in need of a serious recheck of whom they represent. Is non American or is it Americans?

mumbling They are mumbling today in their offices. But that is not going to get votes in 2018 or 2020. Do they keep the resistance and invisible movements? Or they let go to the liberal left. My bet is they are so tied to the movements.....that they cannot cut them loose.

Bernie Sanders came out and said......you had to listen to what was not said about the Trump address. Thank you Bernie. For clearing that up for us. Bernie is good at putting words into the opponents mouth. Bernie went on to put words into Trumps address about Social Security, Medicare, Medicaide. And toss in some idea that Trump is going to let the blue collar workers down while making Big Business.....mmm.....BIGGER.

Bernie......good luck in keeping the DEM party in one piece. Because piece are falling off it like and melting like......snowflakes.Good Lord did I write that? grin

I know Sista that I am thread stealing. So let bring the Obama's into the pic. The former President and his wife are evaluating recent book offers. Right now the highest is $60m .....6 times GBWs 4 times Bill Clinton post White House writing efforts. You got to admit, the former first family is not inline with Bernie Sander's Socialism movement. They are American capitalists.

GWB is in the news again. He just did a interview on his opinion on President Trump. When asked about ISIS.....his words were few. Only 3 in fact...... Go Get Them. GWB has a new book coming out too. Been spending his time painting and send the works to former American military.

Well kids. The USA has a new bonafide President in the Oval Office.

Only someone born and raised in France can possibly 'save' France; bring Marine Le Pen back out of retirement! He would know what to do, just as De Gaulle was brought back,(despite his treason against the French military and les 'piers noir' of Algeria. And similarly France may have to take 2 steps back in order to take steps forward. No cheap-asst politicians; let a soldier do the job that needs doing.

laugh Excellent points! what was the old and now forgotten slogan, "Power To The People!" If all of Europe wanted him as their leader, I'd not object...if this grows, could we be seeing the desire for one leader of all Europe?? Makes me wonder...grin wine

Who cares! He/ she could be from Andorra for all I care or a former valet to the Prince of Liechtenstein or the chauffeur to the Duchy of Fenwick or a cast member of Vikings from Norway...perhaps a fisherman/woman from Portugal...better than any cheap corrupt politician of that loathsome "establishment" corporation anywhere/ everywhere in Europe.
