GUZMAN1: Salting fish and fish eggs with nuts.

Thank you Guzmán

I am looking for some fish by products for a group of fishermen's small proposal so they can get an extra benefit from the fish they harvest. They have very limited resources so there investment capabilities is non-existent.

We have considered to add some value to their fish by preserving the fish and making some products like:
Pickled, smoked.. fish..process the leather...

The eggs from the fish, no way they can use them and sell them because there is a restriction period for fishing when the female fish laid their eggs and that would not be wise (nor legal) to do under their circumstances.

Thinking of nuts giggle

Cashews wow
Anacardium occidentale
(Same botanical family than the Mango)
Embedded image from another site

The largest edible part of a cashew nut is actually not the nut at all, but the pear-sized fruit above the nut. A cashew nut is not a nut inside a round or even oval shell; a cashew nut is a protrusion outside at the bottom end of a soft tropical fruit! This soft red or yellow fruit is called a cashew apple.

As a further irony, the nut grows first, and only when the nut is practically full size does the fruit begin to grow. But eventually the fruit is about 800% larger than the nut. Here in Guatemala or any tropical country you can see and experience this visual treat...

Gosh, how ignorant can one be!!!??

Thank you for this. hug

I grew up in a country where cashew grows and could never get enough to eat when I was in my growth spurt. laugh I was always of the opinion, that, as per your article:
...the nut has several unpleasant chemicals on its outside which have to be removed by treating and then the remains physically scraped off the nut kernel...The chemicals which have to be removed from around the nut are evidently not noticeable inside or around the soft fruit...

All those wasted fruits!!

"The reddish, pear-shaped cashew apple is an edible sweet fruit. It is too delicate for transport and thus cannot be found in markets. Its refreshing juice, known as suco de caju , is popular in Brazil."

Interesting subject!
Now, I am intrigued about this fruit and I must detective

What I found marvelous is the creativity of the design of the elements/components of this mostly salty-water planet, what are we (humans) missing?

Here is a recipe for ackee and corned pork:

I had to google Ackee

In Jamaica, the ackee fruit is a mixed blessing. Though originally native to West Africa, it migrated to Jamaica in 1778 and is now the country's national fruit. If improperly eaten, though, ackee can cause what has been dubbed the Jamaican Vomiting Sickness — which, other than the self-explanatory symptoms, can lead to coma or death. Unripe ackee fruit contains a poison called hypoglycin, so preparers must be careful to wait until the fruit's protective pods turn red and open naturally. Once open, the only edible portion is the yellow arilli, which surround always-toxic black seeds. With all that risk comes a delicious payoff — Jamaica's national dish is ackee with codfish.

Intriguing flavors....

The flavor of the beet's leaves is just delicious and no sense to waste them.

-wash the leaves very well several times until no dirt comes out
- boil water+ salt
- boil the leaves for 2 to 3 min
-sauté onion
-chop the boiled leaves and add to the sauté onion (no salt since the water had already salt)
- add some cooked sliced carrots
- some tomato (optional)
and voilá delicious!

Serve with some warm tortillas and avocado, cheese perhaps, etc..

A few weeks ago I made some "empanadas fritas" filled with the cooked beet's leaves and some curd from organic milk. Usually I do not make them because of the fat but my daughter asked me to and I made them for her.
