rainbowdream2017: One way to render any concept innocuous is to expand its meaning to include everything.
By 1991 the phrase [sustainable development] had acquired such cachet that everything had to be sustainable, and the relatively clear notion of environmental sustainability of the economic subsystem was buried under 'helpful' extensions such as; *social sustainability, *political sustainability, *financial sustainability, *cultural sustainability, and on and on....
Any definition that excludes nothing is a worthless definition.
Do you have an idea of what specific sustainability your talking about ?

It is good to see you checking some good books and if you have read the whole book
The current use of the term "sustainable" comes from the Brundtland report in about 1973, something like- The ability to meet the needs, without compromising the ability of needs being met for future generations..."
And so its actually quite meaningless. You can have a perfectly sustainable lead mine, on the basis of demand for lead decreasing. Future generations wont need as much, due to future technologies.
Sure the thing might be poisoning the wildlife and leaching acid mine drainage into the waterways, and the workers exposed to all sorts of crap. But hey they can still dig the stuff up if they want or choose.

There are as many definitions of Sustainability as there are Ketchup recipes.
On a global scale, what we fail to see is the overpopulation of humans and in so millions are living under infra-human standards, should the human population be "reduced"?. On a local level, I do believe that strengthening the local economy is a good approach and above all "human development" must be the core for whatever definition "Sustainability" has, beyond economics.

In Latinamerica, there is a relatively new approach regarding to Sustainable Development from a "territorial" approach where the development of a whole community is placed above any individual/personal gain.

Chinese candy box
"During the Chinese New Year, it is customary for families to visit relatives at their homes. Candy boxes, often called a Tray of Togetherness or quanhe (??) in Mandarin containing several sweet treats will also be set out to entertain the guests. Common components of the box included candied dried lotus root and seeds, candied dried winter melon, roasted watermelon seeds, and dried coconut, each with a symbolic meaning from wishing for increased fertility to stronger family ties. The goodies are traditionally served in an ornate lacquer box with multiple compartments for each treat, but these days the candy boxes come pre-packed in disposable containers. Other forms of candy can be put in these boxes too."
