I'm making a batch of Yogurt tomorrow ( Archived) (28)

Mar 12, 2017 8:51 PM CST I'm making a batch of Yogurt tomorrow
I haven't made yogurt in about 6 months so I think I'd like some for a change. I'm making strawberry vanilla.

Today I made a soda can candle. For some reason I can't get the candle out of the can so tomorrow I'm going to drill a small hole in the bottom of the can and blow the candle out. I've calculated with 100 PSI of pressure the force on the candle will be 508 pounds. If I'm not careful, the candle will come out of the can like a cannonball. Maybe I'll start with a lower pressure like 25 PSI. I didn't want to drill the can because I wanted to use it again. Maybe I can solder up the hole, of course I could always cut another soda can.

Hmm I haven't made yoghurt since the last time you did either laugh

I wonder what would happen if you put that soda can candle in the freezer confused

I had the remains of a candle in a beautiful glass container which I wanted to re-use, freezing it made it easy to remove in one piece, just ran a knife around the edges conversing

Progress report;
Well, The gallon of milk has been heated to 180 deg f and it is now cooling down to 140 f on its way to 120 f. I've whisked in 3/4 c of sugar to speed up the cooling process as well as 1/2 pound of "Pampa" strawberry fruit spread and a tsp of Vanilla.
When the milk cools to 120 I'll whisk in a cup of store bought yogurt with active yogurt cultures. I have 9 tall crystal tumblers warming as I type which will be filled with the liquid mixture and placed into 2 small styrofoam coolers which will be placed into 1 large styrofoam cooler and by tomorrow morning I'll have a batch of yogurt. Into the fridge they go after being covered with Saran wrap and a rubber band and I'm done.
BTW, I was able to pull the candle out of the can by the wick so the day is off to a great start.

serene and pat, I tried freezing the can(dle) and hitting it with a hair dryer to exploit the different coefficients of expansion between wax and aluminum to no avail. I had great hopes for that endeavor.

The recipe I use to make yogurt does not include sugar and I let the milk-culture mix (after heating, blah bla ..) sit at the right temperature (on a yogurt maker gadget) for 8 or 9 hours because I like it a bit tangy. I do not digest milk but yogurt is ok and I like it. I usually add some fresh fruit and honey after the yogurt is made. Also, i use the yogurt to make pannacota (Jello made of yogurt + some sour cream and fruits).

For the yogurt culture I have used dried yogurt but I use some from the store as well the natural type. There is a difference between brands for the amount of active culture. Here Yoplait is one with the most, according to a friend that is into the chemistry of food.

For the candle what if it is left in the tin?

My Yoghurt maker is back home in Spain, so I've not made any for a goodly while. There's something rewarding about waking up and having a ton of natural yog sitting there...

I do make bread (without a machine) periodically instead - and that's a lot of fun too.

Nice technique!

My house is on solar panels, wired for 12 volts; and packing a propane tank 10 miles round trip on my bicycle makes using propane long enough to make yoghurt too much hassle.

Sailing The Farm, by Fred Neumeyer is a book on making your boat into a self sufficient farm.

He has nice energy saving recipes in it too: like heating a pressure cooker till it seals, then packing it in a box of straw all day to cook stews.

You might enjoy that book.

I'll have to try picking up some yoghurt or kiefer ingredients next time I go to town.

Mahalo nui loa.

Because it's delicious, you can control the sugar level and flavour it however you like and it's soo much cheaper than commercial products conversing

Plus I find making my own produce very satisfying grin

As Serene has said: sugar content,.. quality of it and much less wasted containers-wrapping.

Sure!

since it is your own recipe you just will have to milk the bull and then I might learn (please note I said "might") or not.
