What I don't understand is why they can watch (Illegally) western films and yet not question the difference between what they see and what they are told.

I wonder about this film with respect to retaliation. Obviously the defectors are not worried about being hunted down now that their identities are know to the world so obviously. Makes me wonder if they are really North Korean and if they are N Korean, why didn't they cover their faces or disguise their voices while filming this video.

I asked my Korean students about that, they think the defector's families have all escaped to SK, therefore thy have no fear to discuss openly, they also said that the accents and dialects used were definitely NK.
They have heard many stories similar to those on the video, but acknowledge it could be fake, but based on real stories.
I truly don't know whether true of false, but even if half true, it still goes a long way to explaining why they hold so much hatred for the west.

He likes the idea of a unified Korea, but how that can happen with all the past and present history between them to overcome and a single government installed that can work with both areas, seems highly unlikely to me.

It serves the leader's intention just to justify his acts if violence against the West, particularly America.
The question is, why don't we counter act that kind of lie and tell them the truth.

Well at least now it is known to us how we're terribly portrayed by these innocent victims. I don't blame the general public and it's our obligation to find a way for them to know that all these propaganda are lies.
