Is it not possible to leave untouched places and remote villages as they are or is this world so reliant on tourism that we must leave no stone unturned

It's already been done, AND the the general public has never been told about everything concerning the North and South poles...
"Secret Satellite tech" has already mapped everything out""... go search google earth and try to research the greyed out blurred areas... "It can't be done, its Secret"
The only reason many Deposits/or 5000 year old plus Mining Sites have not been exploited to their full potential yet is because there is not enough money in it for mining consortium's to gather investors and make a reasonable profit.

I'm a fool to think that some pristine landscapes can remain without a human footprint

White rhinos were just used as an analogy
I think you underestimate a lot of people. Nobody I know wants to be the one to "kill the last white rhino". On the contrary, they're desperate to save them....but those are the people I relate to, so it's relative.
I'd like to be the guy that fluffed the last white rhino, to get a sample for a groundbreaking research project that brings them back from the brink of extinction. Then there can be a giant bronze statue of me in Trafalgar square, during the exact moment of the procedure. So lifelike, you can see his lips trembling and his hooves all curling up.

There are some natural reserves around the globe that allow natural-wild life to develop.
Douglas Tompkins co-founder of the brand North Face (who died in a kayak accident due to hypothermia) had lots of land to be kept in their natural status and now his widow is donating 400,000 ha in the Patagonia area to the Chilean gov for natural reserves-parks.
The problem is that we are too many for the current cycling process of the world's energy.
