Six planes and 200 Spanish soldiers help fight fire in Portugal. Italy sent two planes and France three.

These are the Canadair/Bombardier models and Air Tractor, all widely used against fires.

I think that the southern european countries should have bigger planes as the Boeing 747-400 SuperTanker, that carries much more water to fight big fires.

Perhaps the European Union is not interested because it's not made in the EU.

It certainly is ... NZ and Australia especially have seen many enormously destructive fires over the last few years and I'd never seen anything on the scale of that pic before today!

The incidence of fire seems to be on the increase globally ... Sometimes one cannot help but speculate in terms of 'cause and effect' as to 'why that might be occurring'

But for now here's hoping the people of Portugal, London and such other places are getting all that's humanly possibly by way of help and support.

Just thinking about that a bit more ... a Jumbo tanker could cross the Atlantic in around 12 hours, I don't know how long it would take to fill or maybe there would be advantage in flying it over pre-filled and directly to the incident site ?

Perhaps it sounds silly as the name was used in 'Thunderbirds series' but perhaps there actually could be some sort 'International Rescue Organisation' that could co-ordinate rapid response to such events?

Maybe it already exists ?

Aye, they say that 'Nostalgia is just looking back and thinking that things were better then than they are now ...'

But, even recognising that I saw those days 'through the eyes of a child' I still 90% suspect that the world was more 'people friendly' ... in general, much safer then than it is today ?

Not a bad idea.

These late years have been large fires in Spain, Portugal, Greece. Perhaps the europeans might have an international coordination to join forces when needed.

galrads: Fox News channel here just reported on this fire. They said that a lightning strike is the prime suspect for being the source of ignition.

.
"Journalism"

As you are closer to them ask them how they came by that idea because in Portugal the detectives are saying that there could be as many as 60 different fires started by 'someone' and they are investigating and also on the radio, in the main newspapers, there is absolutely no mention of "Lightening".

This is not what I have read. Although the official hypothesis points to lightning, a spokesman for the Fire Brigade estimates that up to 75% of fires in Portugal are intentionally provoked.

Many portuguese forests have been replanted with eucalyptus trees, especially susceptible to the flames.

Thankyou Gunman for taking the trouble to inform us of this tragedy, and Galrads for the updates.

One cannot begin to imagine the awful suffering of the people who died.

It is not what they report but how. Also the way they interview people after such accidents is absmil, and cruel catching people at their most vunerabel and putting words into thier mouths then writing that.

Our tv news station and comentaters in the main are worse still, elections going on and they can make or break a party, surely that cannot be right.

Yep i do not buy either anymore. Tyne-tees-news in the evenings is the best news, then for me comes RT news, as the mediators keep the debates in a sensible order and letting people speak without it becoming a cat fight.
I actually get to know more in depth news on UK RT news teddybear
