Conrad73: why in heck should they favor some one elses Service, when they have their own?
Because the EU Dictators hate success, unless they have a hand on the purse!!!!
This is why they are trying to make the Brexit so hard, they know the UK will become successful without EU regulations, and worse, they lose the huge monthly contributions made by Britain.

Google said in a filing it expects to pay $2.7 billion EU fine, suggesting appeal might not work
In an 8-K filed by Google on Tuesday, the company said it expects to accrue the EU's $2.7 billion fine in the second quarter of 2017. Google was fined for antitrust practices, though it argues eBay and Amazon are huge competitors in the online shopping space. Google says it will review the formal decision by the EU.
ChesneyChrist: In Germany you can sue Google for providing aerial photographs of your property to criminals and ne'er do wells online.
In Germany you have the right not to be sold against your own will and criminals don't have the automatic right to access and consume the plans of your home.
In other lands economics is following the more efficient model of capitalism where you strip-out free will and other various barriers to trade. Business is easier this when you can mould your customer to the business instead of the other way around.

That little car with the satellite on top? intrusion? but will they argue space satellites? dam right! Nothing is safe.
Whether one wants to be, or not on the map of google. Rights have disappeared.

The pressure of the European Commission is also on the fiscal tactics of the big technology companies.
Since May 1, the company began operating through four branches of its Luxembourg company, Amazon EU. In Spain, Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, Amazon pays taxes now in these countries by the sales made on its respective websites.
Back when i was 17, I was dating a woman who worked for Bell Telephone. The government decided the company was too big and divided it up. I didn't understand how the government could interfere with success. I was young and stupid I guess.
Now, 50 years later, I find that I am now old and stupid because I don't understand how the government can interfere with a company being all they can be....that is called success. But what do I know, I am just a" dumba** libtard?"
Although the money is a drop in the ocean i just think it is a warning, as monopolies then can fix prices to what they want, not giving fair playing field.
Yep a bit like EU creating a monopolie for trade etc, it has been allowed to get , (yes too big for its britches)

Brussels pulled the same Stunt on Microsoft, because the Browser of Windows was hardcoded into the Operating-System and couldn't be removed! Didn't prevent Customers from installing and using a different Browser, but those unelected Jerks took offense and fined M$ billions! Guess that Slushfund has run out,so they expect GOOGLE to replenish it!
I agree it sounds mostly like they want a piece of the pie from Internet companies doing business in their nations. Weird thing is that they really are not companies from those countries [yes I know they have EU branches but that is merely smoke & mirrors so they can be taxed]. I don't think it is all that admirable. What I do like is the European expectation of online privacy for it's citizens. We could use a little of that in the U.S.
fines and penalties related to breaches of individual privacy I would not find distasteful. In fact, perhaps they should be more expensive to have some impact on Google, To encourage them to perhaps operate with more care for individual privacy, to make it easy, for example , to opt out of google searches, or satellite images, but the gains simply to tax something because it exists, that is distasteful.
