Objectively speaking today is better. Subjectives is a different story. Within 6 months of winning jackpot on the lottery the majority of winners are no happier than they were before they won.
We're also more ambitious today and part and parcel with ambition is the, often deeply repressed, sense that you're not good enough as you are. Self-help and self-improvement is based upon low self-esteem. In the past people were content to know their station and that's a big reason why our ancestors never knew the angst which we do today.
The world is a lot richer but in a sense the individual is all the poorer. Mankind degenerates with every advance, things aren't as clear-cut as they first appear.

..wellllllll. then....as a boy I did look up at him.....most of my family were in the air force......but he....won the vic/cross 3 times......but alas it went to his head...never been the same since......cant say anything more...its to heart breaking.....Was it hard growing up with Mile D12 as your best friend ?

I can compare my childhood without gadgets with a childhood of my son. We were definitely happier. We were spending much time outdoors, our parents were not afraid to leave us outdoors. We had many real friends with whom we played and had lot of other things to do. We were not addicted to tablets or play stations. And winter was a real fun time! We were playing snowballs, making snowmen, sledding, skiing - nobody stayed at home, sitting before TV or computer. Sure, each epoch has its advantages. But in my opinion, when people live in harmony, close to nature and animals, the more happy they are

I believe that's what Jesus meant by blessed are the poor; woe to the rich. I also believe it's what the great writers of conservatism - people like Tolkien - meant by making the heroes of their novels people who were all humility and no ambition.
