Swine, Pigs, Hogs, are cleaner than dogs and some people ( Archived) (16)

I am sure pigs got a reputation of being dirty animals from the fact that they like to wallow in mud. They have no desire to clean the dried mud off themselves and as a result they look atrocious to the human eye. What the casual observer doesn't realize however, is that pigs cover themselves with caked on mud as a defense against stinging insects. Another trait about pigs which makes them inherently clean is a pig will never crap where it eats unless it's forced to by crowded confinement by humans, unlike many other animals perceived to be clean. Another reason pigs are thought to be dirty animals is caused by the way they are kept in captivity with no ability to get out onto the ground.

I raised pigs at one time when I had a farm and I had a pregnant sow named Miss Babe. She weighed about 450 lbs. I made her a nice place in the barn to have her babies and one day she was no longer pregnant and there were no piglets to be found. I looked all around for her piglets and found them in a neat little pile in a hollow she had dug out about 50 yards from the barn. I felt she knew better than I did what was best for her babies and left them there where she would go to nurse them and protect them.
BTW, At one time I had 18 pigs and there was no nasty smell around the farm in fact you wouldn't even know there were pigs there unless you actually saw them. The reason for this was because my pigs were allowed to free range instead of being kept in a closed building living on concrete.

One time during hunting season a pickup truck with 2 hunters came down my 300 foot long driveway to my house. I assumed they wanted to ask if I saw any deer or if they could hunt on my land. I happened to have 2 boar hogs that weighed about 300 lbs each that liked to sleep in the crawl space under my house and they came out and stood in the driveway facing the truck. Those guys never even got out of the truck but backed all the way out to the road and I never saw them again. I laughed my a** off.

Did they think it was the ghosts of some animals they had killed in the past dunno

Pigs are smart all right , not possible to read their face like a dog or horse , just one poker face . Me and some neighbours have had a lot of trouble this winter with wild ones . One running around that's going to dress 180-200 lb that's kept himself safe . Fella out Monday night before last with pig dogs hoping to cross his trail during the dark , well fella goes through neighbours trail camera with his dogs six hours later so did the boar .

Pigs are real interesting critters eh Scooby ...

While the PRIMATES most resemble our shape and form it's my understanding that The Pig is our nearest relation in terms of genetics and that pigs are being 'genetically engineered' ( using cross breeding methods that are best perhaps not discussed here ) to provide replacement organs for transplant into humans.

Do you recall the scene from HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy set in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe where the cow which has been specially bred so that "It wants to beaten" is wheeled ... well ( black humour alert )

Just imagine a scene from the future where a person breeds 'genetically matched' pigs so they have a stock of 'spare parts' on hand for self and family?

Brilliant ... grandad needs a new kidney so he gets that and then the freezer is filled to feed the family?

But, on a serious and challenging note ... I think we all understand the "Game of Chinese Whispers" and may have heard of a supposed similar chain where a military commander sent a message vi a human chain ?

"Send reinforcements we're going to advance " was the message sent but " Lend three and fourpence we're going to a dance" was the message delivered.

Most people understand that 'this happens' and over long periods of time meanings are lost / changed / diluted / compromised ?

So, back to the Humble Porker

As we know, many religions refuse to eat pork, and 'the current day message' is as you said 'centred around unclean' and I agree with you that's quite a slur on the pig.

Dare I ask and wonder out loud if, way back in time, the ancients ACTUALLY did not eat pigs because they understood the close genetic relationship that exists between man and pig ?

Might then, over time, have that knowledge have been lost but the 'taboo' on eating pig been sustained ... and, one day someone decided that 'it must be because' the pig LOOKS to be dirty ?

Pigs are considered dirty not because they like the mud but because they will eat anything including the corpses of their mates or even humans...

Unfortunately thats a weak argument ... it's not that long since human cannibalism was still common place ( even in 'civilised' places like NZ ) and there's regular stories that the practice is alive and well in PNG and etc

Humans still turn to cannibalism in extreme survival situations ...

I'm not arguing who is dirtier Hex...
Yes, human cannibalism is a fact, but the pigs are a normal food for us...
Someone once said you are what you eat, right...
We are as dirty as the pigs are...laugh
