Lightly steamed cabbage with garlic butter, or plant based alternative is nice.
Polish tomato soup - fry onions and garlic in a little oil. Add seived, fresh tomatoes, or unseived if you want to retain the nutritious pulp and seeds. Add stock and a very small handful of rice. When it's nearly cooked add a chopped cabbage leaf, salt, freshly ground black pepper, tamari, maybe a few drops of lemon juice, or anything else you fancy to tweak the flavour.
jac_the_gripper: Hmm...lush. I'm gonna try that sometime.

Welsh recipe :
Boil seasoned water in a medium/ large saucepan, add chopped leaks, then gently simmer for about as much time as it takes to attend the sheep 5/7 minutes. Perfect results every time, unless the wife spots your flies undone!

Yes, using garlic butter alone produces a lighter but fabulous flavour
I tried with onions, that was a bit bland, but the leafy greens from your national emblem ( the leek) work extremely well ... though gotta keep an eye on those as I like them just beyond wilted ... gonna try a hint of leon juice ... that sounds sharp !

mollybaby: I'm going to ruin the national stereotype...I don't cook cabbage
Hmmmm ....but I thought the Great Potato was more associated with Ireland M
Certainly my grand parents used it widely and served it beautifully ... he'd make Leek and Potato soup and tell us it was 'International Cuisine' and it's still a fav of mine in cold weather !

Hex, bacon and cabbage is one of the traditional 'national dishes'
Sweatheart cabbage chopped finely melt knob butter in wok with a little rapeseed oil, 2 mins and Bobs your uncle done, can be eaten with anything Sunday Dinner with other veggies this is fine.
You can add Garam masarla but i like it plain. Sweatheart cabbabge in not tough at all, can even chop finely to add to coleslaw

Cabbage grows easily here, as do potatoes.
LOL ... well, I thought it was Great North East dish (The Kingdom of Geordieland)
Neither grandparent told me it was from Ireland - mind 'in this moment' I suddenly realised how little they ever spoke of Ireland and I probably understand why.
But that would be a quiet chat over a Guinness and in a much less public group !

Serve with anything but especially good grilled bacon and fried eggs and hash browns
