A local one to my UK home has special paper that looks like newspaper, but is greaseproof and nondangerous. But I completely agree with True, the fish&Chips we had as kids were far far better than the stuff sold today. Guess that is why it is no longer the most popular takeaway.
Chinese - 35 per cent Indian - 24 per cent Pizza - 13 per cent Fish and Chips - 7 per cent English - 4 per cent Italian - 4 per cent Burgers - 3 per cent Thai - 2 per cent Mexican - 1 per cent Turkish - 1 per cent

hi ...rizlared.........thanks for agreeing......no food (eg)....meat /chicken/veg....tastes the same...to many chemicals.....lack of flavour.......meat without fat /not grass fed......to much dry foods...(cattle)....dont eat the fat....but enjoy the flavor.....they use arsenic....to increase poulty growth....etc...etc..etc.........its a case of..quantity...before quality.......in years to come.....our children will suffer...because of this.......jmo. ......truheart.
Duromojon: the tint from the paper acts as an extra flavor. methinks.
I'm not from England
Nope just brings back sweet memories----newspaper still had a waxproof sheet inside protecting food from print and keeping delish food realy hot. This paper that looks like newspaper does not fool me as it does not keep things even warm, no more long trips for supper at chippy

Another of those Brit things that bit the dust when we joined the CM ...
I still think Ted Heath ought to have been shot for treason !!!!
for Ted Heath ... I hope he spins dizzy in his grave !!!!
mollybaby: We can still get fish and chips wrapped in paper. Not newspaper, just plain unprinted paper
Somehow the food tasted better from it
Well, down here in the nation that leads the world in time and date ... the local chippy uses newspaper for the outer covering and there plain white and a layer of greaseproof and then the chips !
I am Dutch selling fish in Germany. I never understood why the Britishy are having this strange habbit. Fish at least quality fish, if well prepared, is very delicious and shouldn't be rapped into a newspaper. What is wrong with a plate or even a box? It gives the fish a better presentation then an old newspaper paper and it hardly costs anything. For me the presentation of the food I sell counts as well. Recently a family who came over from GB had lunch by me and I got the biggest compliment a British can give. "Your fish and chips are better than the one we eat in London " Thats one of the reasons I like to sell well presentated quality food. I love compliments and it all starts with the presentation.
