This is the million dollar question. I've had this problem for years. Doctors don't seem to think it's a big problem. That's when I want to wring their necks. What would a doctor do if had to operate in the morning and couldn't sleep all night?

You tit! Whats it with guys and ladders? Problems reading the instructions about multitasking while up on one? Seriously tho, sorry to hear that, have a fair idea how much pain youre in, I see it all the time at work, do get some serious painkillers/sleeping pills

Do not play with insomnia. There are many kind of insomnia. It is about how often occur and how many days and nighs you not sleep. Usualy men sleep because they need to dream. Dreaming is the way of the brain to reset and clean the mind. If you observe your mind you will notice that thoughts are comming and going triggered by stimulus. During sleep no trigger is present so the brain will generate thoughts (dreams) because of inertia. Triggred by the memory. Durig sleep you clean your cash memory.
If you think too much and do not give freedom to your brain to reset or to relax then you will experiment insomnia and later halucinations.
My advice. Do not take yourself and your thoughts much too serious. Consider that those are products of your life (enviroment and stimulus) and you cannot control those even if you believe that you can do it. Thoughts have their own life.
When you go to sleep do not produce more stimulus. Do not start to think and when thoughts are present give them peace and consider those as a residual product of the day. Do not jump together with those from a idea to the other. Sorry, I cannot explain better. Please forget my advice if your life experience and intuition says tha you do not understand what is said. I do not want that you apply blind an advice.
But more important is to understand. NEWER WORRY - NEVER FORCE THINGS HAPPEN. THIS ONLY FAVORIZE INSOMNIA.
My record was 3 weeks of insomnia. Do not ask me how this ended. If 3 day pass and you cannot sleep then visit the doctor. Then may be some serious trouble in your life and habbits.
One more thing. Drugs do not solve the cause of insomnia. Drugs are shuting you down because you are not able do it yourself.e The cause of insomnia is to be searchde in the way how people relate to themself and to life. In their habits. Wh
