I'm in a need of a new computer. Was kinda "lucky" so far and didn't have to choose myself. Just paid for one that someone else told me is a good choice.
Now I've decided to be an adult and buy a computer after my own choice. What exactly is there to be aware of?

For average use, don't worry about the CPU(Processor) the important parts are memory 8g should be min, Hard drive storage, 1TB is a reasonable size, unless you buy a Mac, in which case a smaller drive would be okay. A fast graphics card is also a useful addition but not as important as the above.

Well... I'm guessing that I have to thank you, but it's exactly that kind of "language" that prevented me to understand the matter before. I have access to internet and I can google. And everything on the subject "to buy a new computer" will be filled with just the same talk you've kindly offered here.
Yes, I've managed to survived that far, while using (and even owning a computer) without knowing a single word of the jargon.
Perhaps, the question is wrongly formulated. Here's a new question.
If you were to buy a new computer to yourself, what factors would you pay attention to? Please, explain it simply to one technology-illiterate blonde woman.

Okay sorry, so I would need to ask some questions, First, what do you mainly want to do with the computer? Financial spreadsheets. (doing accounts etc) Word proscessing. (Writing letters) Surfing the internet Internet Chatting.
Then do you want a laptop to carry anywhere or a desktop computer that stays in one room?
At about £300, comes complete with scrren and keyboard etc, and although refurbished, it is cheap and a well know brand, refurbished computers come with the same warranty as new ones and are often better as all the common problems have been fixed.

Finally the max budget you hope to use.
Then it is easy to find the most suitable.
Budget isn't the issue.
That matter settled... I'd like a stationary machine with decent working memory that would allow to watch videos and films without the picture getting "freezing" or covered with squares. I guess I'd need a lot of hard drive (I've cheated and googled "hard drive") memory... Are we talking about teras here? Few years ago it was gigas, I don't know how far the technology advanced. How many teras is "fashionable" nowadays?
Then there's certainly other matters that I'm not aware of or just judged to be too boring to dive into. Please, enlighten me.
Again, is there a screen with inbuilt speakers and a camera? I'm so tired of that jungle of wires under my desk :(

If you want a good computer on a stable operating system go apple. Once you've tried one you'll never go back. Love my Mac mini and iPad and iPhone and AirPods

/Grateful in advance
If money is not a problem then the New Apple iMac would answer all your requests, but it is pricey Starting at around £1000, and no cables except the power lead, unless you wanted to watch DVDs in which case you would need a separate DVD drive attached to the computer.
Dell and HP also do all in one computers, the Lenovo ones are a bit slow and use older technology so forget them.
1000 gigabytes is 1 terabyte, in today's world 1 terabyte is about right unless you have thousands of films or photos, then 2-3 TB would be better. The picture breaking up/freezing may be a slow internet connection not the computer, or if it happens when watching from a hard drive, would indicate a drive problem or worse.
If it was me, I would wait until Apple release the new iMac in December, as the price will drop on the previous models and they are possibly the best computers in the market today. The built-in screen is just amazing and perfect for watching films, it is also very very easy to use, but different from MSwindows, so may take a bit to find your way around Check Apple website Apple.com/store
and press the "mac" button for the various type available.

I really like the Mac Mini, just a shame Apple dropped their monitor or I would have bought another one, but now the new iMac is coming that will really open eyes, 5k retina screen and 128g mem with an 18-core Xeon processor, it could be the most powerful desktop computer ever.
I hate to think of the pric, but I started saving as soon as I heard about it, maybe next year I can buy the mouse and the rest a few years later

Take the advice and get a Mac, either desk or laptop and one you actually own it, you'll be surprised how fast you will know the all the tech talk as you work with your Mac. Both male and females have problems at first and have a hard time making a choice about a computer and many make mistakes of choosing a wrong one. Just go for the best...get a Mac...added bonus....no virus can yet penetrate their programs. You don't need costly security programs installed. Bon chance!
aries1234: The 2 TB HP notebook is a good one and doesn't break the bank.
l'm shocked & flabbergasted, that someone else in this plethora of geniuses, knows this BIG laptop is a real gem ...shut the lid when not in use to keep the dust off the keyboard & flies/crap off the screen
HP OMEN 17.3" ...choices are 12, 16 or 32gb Ram ...FHD or 4K Screen ...1 or 2 Tb Hard-drive, etc ....l use an old HP Envy 17.3" 16gb Ram, FHD, 2 Tb Hard-drive & it is very efficient, no problems with graphics or games.
My experience is that a 16gb Ram & nvidia Geforce graphics or similar are absolutely essential to keep everything working smoothly
