China has an air quality monitoring network with about 1500 sites. 1500 air quality monitoring sites for all of China? The state of Ohio has that many continuous and intermittent air sampling and reporting stations.
My friends recently visited several locations there including Disney China. They felt sick with low energy every day they were there. They dealt with eyes burning, coughing, gagging with throats that felt like they were breathing fire.
Air pollution there cuts three years of an individuals lifespan.

Why do they put up with such airborne filth in China?

When I was in Philadelphia I suffered with a chronic chest infection due to the pollution but I didn’t jump to the conclusion all of America was like that! I was in Shanghai in late August, the air was not clean, but burning eyes? Gagging? Not even close.

Yep, pretty soon the USA will be blamed for pollution in India too, because they are trying to chase the American dream too like China.....
The USA is to blame for this too .... An air quality monitoring app has been told by Chinese authorities to stop displaying pollution levels that exceed an official cutoff point.

At the same time China was emerging as a place with cheap labour, and few restrictions, so the GREEDY US companies moved the manufacturing to China and other Asian countries, with no regard to the repercussions the less developed countries would incur.
2, Pollution dropped in the USA and rose in Asia, especially China, by the time China realised, the problem had grown far far worse than that previously in the USA, they tried to control it and failed. Now, the controls are a lot more ridge and enforced, and slowly, the pollution is being reduced.
To accuse a third world country, that was struggling with the largest population and a shortage of food, of being greedy, is just the bias put about by the media and those who really do not know the history of Asia.
3, Now that China is emerging as a powerful and determined country, those who have no understanding have become fearful, they start ridiculous rumours to try and move support from Asia back to the USA.
For years and years, the USA was a country that all others looked up to, want to emulate America and the American Dream, but now, there is another country, that has grown faster and more powerful than any in the history of the world. An alternative to the American Dream, and because other countries are now starting to build closer ties with China rather than the USA, it makes for an unsettles United States.
The USA is losing top position and they don't like it.

China is far from being perfect, like all countries, they make mistakes. By western standards China does do some strange things, Internet control, heavy enforcement of punishment for dissidents, rocketing house prices etc etc etc. But poverty is being reduced, more jobs available and more creativity is happening, the HIGH speed train , solar energy, medicines for example.
It is always easy to follow the sheep, not so easy to look at the whole picture!

How about you and the rest of the world pay three times the amount for goods manufactured in your own countries, and stop buying from China, that would soon remove almost all pollution from China.
Countries want cheap goods, but at the same time refuse to make them themselves. Greed for cheap goods is the cause of pollution, and as soon as that greed is stopped, so will pollution.

And I would appreciate that you stop accusing me of things untrue. I chose to focus on air quality in China. If you want to focus on global air quality, please start a thread on global pollution or whatever pollution. I will be glad to participate in it.
btw, for what it is worth, my career was in environmental science, mostly air pollution control. We once saw rivers easily catch fire from industrial waste and hardly saw blue skies. The USA's attempt to deal with air quality goes back to 1955 and it wasn't until around 1990 that we started to significant improvements of the National Air Quality Standards for criteria pollutants.. Ozone and particulate matter are still problematic nationally.

not surprised to find out its the US's fault , I new that all the time . 
big fat tariff help make US company's stay in business and pull those dirty jobs away from China . I don't know why the Trump does not round up the tariff at 100 % can't have those poor Chinese choking can we . China saying is going to do this or that to combat pollution is only just that ,saying . Their leadership claimed they were going to close steel mills that were not up to standard , ha what a farking joke . China has been exporting sola panels here at well below cost , thankfully
