I put this under "Jokes & Humour" because i hope it will be that and as Serene asked to liven things up.

Some days ago i was takling to an old client in Portugal and he said a word that is not normally used these days, later l thought that there are so many words and sayings that we do not hear now.

My father suffered back problems and always said to my mother to warm the bottle of "Embrocation" by the fire to rub his back.

I suffered "Chilblains" as a kid and i have not heard of anyone having them for years, i remember the treatment was a tin of Grasshopper ointment that was a green cream.

Lastly, when people asked how others are they may say "I have been queer lately", i think not many admit to that now.

Bring out your old words and sayings and at least try to brighten Serene´s day.

Some old British words which imho could be re-introduced to lessen the boredom of reading about constant modern culture & Young-slang

APTYCOCK: A quick-witted or intelligent young man. (SW England)

BANG-A-BONK: It might not look like it, but this is a verb meaning “to sit lazily on a riverbank.” (Gloucestershire)

BAUCHLE: A name for an old worn out shoe, and in particular one that no longer has a heel—although it was also used figuratively to refer to a pointless or useless person. (Ireland)

CLIMB-TACK: A cat that likes to walk along high shelves or picture rails is a climb-tack. (Yorkshire)

CLOMPH: To walk in shoes which are too large for your feet. (Central England)

Just spoke to my father on skype, he told me, "It is a beautiful autumnal day"

Most people would say "a lovely autumn day" I think "autumnal" is so much nicer lol.

Many are simply verbigerators....ones that senselessly repeat cliche's: People consider him a sage, and his advice was eagerly sought . No one ever realized that old Reginald was nothing more than a senile old verbigerators with a talent for endlessly repeating the most mundane platitudes as wit. laugh

laugh

Funny that you should bring up this topic Yubba conversing I was thinking only the other day that when I wasn't feeling well as a child, nothing serious, just maybe a stomach upset, headache or whatever, my mother would keep me home from school for the day and my note to teacher would read that I'd had a 'bilious attack' laugh
