Yesterday, my friend & l found a chirpy, brave little fledgling hedge-sparrow hiding in my garden & not wanting the horrible death of yet another baby bird or baby hedgehog on my conscience, l fetched the ladder & climbed into the tops of trees / searched bushes, until l found its nest, complete with eggs, returning the tiny tweeter to domestic bliss and a second chance at life ...my karma restored please cats meow frog

But hedgehogs are not native to NZ, neither are possums. You should be trying to get rid of both.

It didnt take much looking to find out hedgehogs were introduced. I'm pretty sure possums are also introduced, from Australia. Certainly the ones I saw over there are much bigger than the ones here.

You're kidding right? That will never work... Possums co-evolved with 1080 (its an acid that occurs naturally in gum leaves). This is why a possum can handle a lot more 1080 than a horse can. Maybe they're targeting animals not native to Australia and other species that 1080 actually kills

You'd get on top of it quicker if you just used them for pet food/fertiliser.

Yes, the australian possum is a gigantic problem here, eating up the bush & native birds eggs ...our government helicopter drops many tonnes of australian 1080 poison most years to control / kill possums, including deer, goats, wild pig, rabbits, wallabies & all the birds ...the bush is silent after a drop, dead ...and it still doesn't solve the possum problem

...if they put a $2 bounty on possum tails, they would employ the unemployable & get rid of possums in 5-10 years ...but of course that would be the sensible option & governments don't do sensible

I believe in non intervention.
Let nature take its course.

Delicate thing the ecosystem.
That bird you saved could have a killer strain of bird flu that may wipe out humanity scold

and it will all be your fault professor

That is the old fashioned, stupid, lazy & arrogant point of view ...obviously the loss of humanity would be a plus, plus for this planet ...so we must not intervene & let nature take its course professor
