I know people from my band days who studied privately with sympathetic professional working guitarists who also doubled on Banjo both 4 & 5 strings - (Not 3 chord wonders) - Then some went on to specialise on Banjo & Uke with George Formby Ukele / Banjo Society group, There are many branches in the UK -

BUT this could help

Not Banjo, but guitar, which I guess isn't the same but kind of, in that it's a similar learning process, I think. The initial stages can be slow going, but once you have the basic chord shapes and basic picking down, progress can be quite fast. You've just got to persevere for the first few months and put in some solid hours, then you'll be able to start to enjoy actually playing songs which is really fulfilling.

Playing music is one of those things in life, I've found, the rewards come in direct proportion to the amount of effort put into it. Be strict with a minimum of 30 minutes a day practice (no excuses!!) and you'll be up and going in a few months. That was my experience.

I'm excited for you. You'll have so much fun.

I think banjos can be harder to play well than guitars.

A good guitar player can just strum.

A good banjo player has to be able to pick.

The open G tuning might make banjos easier to play than guitars with standard tuning; but, if you tune your guitar to a taro patch slack key tuning, the chords and picking work the same as on a banjo; and you can play all the major chords, (including flats and sharps) with one finger.

"The most common slack key tuning, called "taro patch," makes a G major chord. Starting from the standard EADGBE, the high and low E strings are lowered or "slacked" to D and the fifth string from A down to G, so the notes become DGDGBD. As the chart below shows, there are also major-chord tunings based on C, F, and D."
