I play a banjolele.

Banjos are tuned to open G.

That means you can begin playing chords with one finger.

Try putting one finger on the second fret: that'll be an A.

Strum it twice, then do the same thing on the 9th fret, then on the 11th fret...

Then go back to the 9th fret and strum it once.

That oughta get you started on, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."

Do the same thing with every chord fingering you learn.

That's the fastest way to learn your way up and down the fretboard.

My instructions were for a 4 string banjo.

If your's is a 5 string, the string that has a tuning peg on the neck is a drone string.

If you're strumming the 5th string, it might not sound like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."

Pete Seeger wrote the first book on how to play a banjo. He also cleaned up the Hudson River and marched along side Martin Luther King.

Lots and lots of useful info here

From Britain, dedicated to 5-string banjos and music before Bluegrass. I wish more "pickers" would get into this.

Banjo is no more difficult to learn than any other stringed instrument. Practise every chance you get. The main difference is the 5th string that helps play scales (or a pounding drone rhythm). Here's a vid that may fire you up or scare you away:

As long as you're already tuning a stringed instrument to open G...

And, since open G is a slack key and slide tuning on a guitar and ukulele...

All the scales you learn on the banjo, can be useful on other instruments.

You might as well buy a slide, and make a conscious decision to practice playing slack key guitar and slack key ukulele, while your learning to play your banjo.

I don't suppose that learning to play the banjo is easy, but it can't be harder than listening to the banjo.
