Get copies of newspapers from Beirut in English from a dealer in international newspapers and look up current population for both Beirut and the entire country then think about what are chances of ....(fill in the blank)
You'd be just as safe there as any city in England; more so than in many across the US or even some parts of NYC...
Beirut used to be known as the Paris of the Middle East until the 80's and today it's quiet, no more raging gun battles between rival sects or religions. No more "no go areas" as some cities have in England due to the volatile migrants festering with hatreds for/ against Brits especially if you are white. Go to Beirut and enjoy yourself; it's again quite beautiful and people generally enjoy all tourists who come...well, unless you are French...they do have a long memory of when France tried to rule there .

Someone in my family is going to Algeria (again) because of work and I wonder if anyone knows what is interesting from there to bring home.
I have had dates from there and i usually use dates for baking goodies but the flavor is not different from dates from elsewhere (maybe my taste buds are not that refined).
Has any one had any experience in Algerian cuisine, spices, or the likes?

They will be received by Algerian gov people and they will do the traveling with them only but they will be taken to the local markets as before and since i like to cook I have already made my request for some spices: grains of paradise, long pepper, black cardamom and a few others, just being modest. I am more into minimalism so I would not request any thing else.
As for the French I am not very happy they were defeated here

I already did check at Amazon.com and they do carry all those spices but the prices are high (plus the shipping cost) besides they will be for free to me and they will be fresher.

And now she is going to see it, and i admire her for having the courage to do it,,
Although i will worry until she returns safely, i'm trying not to instill fear into her .

Well some people on here were very good sending relevant links,, and of course i
checked it out myself , but some reports are , not too bad and some are a bit worrying.
