Maybe because he always thought of the young man he loved? dunno I read once that "Mona Lisa" is an anagram of the name of that young gentleman.

There is also a 'look' that is popular at different times. Same as body shapes. So maybe that look was en vogue at that time.

Always follow the money. Not unlike Edison, who hired many people to invent things for him and Edison got the credit, so did the Medici’s hire droves of people to produce what Da Vinci was given credit for. The Medici bankers also commissioned and paid for the renaissance which included Michelangelo who just supervised the work in the Sistine chapel and Galileo was just handed a navigators telescope and told to look up in the sky with it. Always follow the money.
