Traditionally we made people tense, nervous and unhappy so they'd be disciplined and hard-working - that's what the whip and the sword of damocles are for - in modern day it's more about encouraging people to use their creativity and skill where nerves are more of an enemy than an ally.

Having said that about nerves being more of an enemy than a friend, if I was dealing with a spoilt or excessively cocky git tough love and the whip will remain on the table. People who think too much of themselves would be metered out with anti-narcissistic dread. Ego-mania is countered by the fear of god.

Beautiful women and rich kids are people you don't give the benefit of the doubt to or go to any great lengths to reassure or praise. Americans are similar. Nice guy finishes amongst narcissism there are people in this world you don't appease and encourage without first putting the fear of god into them.
