to do with Surveillance.

the british have involved themselves
in this so called rescue and they are
not liked by the argentines. Not to mention
there are american ice cutters involved.
Both having bases in antartica as well as others.

there is more to this than the media narrative.

From Reuters
"The ARA San Juan, a class ship TR-1700 built in Germany in the 1980s, disappeared on November 15 with 44 crew members after reporting an electrical fault while sailing from the south of the country to the Mar del Plata naval base, firing a great search operation.

The Argentine Navy confirmed two reports of a violent event under the sea that occurred on the same day that the ship lost communication and near its last known position.

"We are talking about an anomalous, singular, short, violent, non-nuclear event, consistent with an explosion," Enrique Balbi, spokesman for the Navy, told reporters, adding that ships from several countries were heading to the area to search for traces of the ARA San Juan."

FORGET the South China Sea. The Chinese have been carrying out secret military activities and making a grab for land that Australia must wise up to.

“China has conducted undeclared military activities in Antarctica, is building up a case for a territorial claim, and is engaging in minerals exploration there,” the report says.
“The calculation that the Australian government has long made in short-changing Antarctic affairs in order to boost activities up north is looking increasingly risky.” China has ceased being a minor player in the polar regions and is becoming a major actor as a result of a huge budget increase in the past decade. Beijing is operating two icebreakers down south and has a third under construction.

Antarctic mission underlines Argentina’s territorial claims

Ms Malcorra insists her government is strengthening sovereignty in a “modern” way by defending the integrity of the polar region and of Argentine territory.

Yet there may be trouble on the horizon for Antarctica as a hub for science and as a model for international relations. Antarctica is understood to have significant reserves of oil and gas as well as deposits of coal, chromium and iron ore. According to the US Geological Survey, there could be as many as 36 billion barrels of oil and gas buried under the ice and rock, almost impossible to reach now but potentially accessible as technology continues to improve.

A growing number of countries are either opening bases or expanding their existing presence on the continent. China’s Great Wall Station sits on King George Island, one of the South Shetlands grouping, and contains an indoor badminton court as well as accommodation for 150 persons.

Chinese icebreaker steams for Antarctica in polar power play
November 8, 2017 by Ryan Mcmorrow

The Chinese ice-breaker Xuelong steamed south from Shanghai on Wednesday bound for Antarctica, where it will establish China's newest base as Beijing strives to become a polar power.

China has a growing collection of outposts, with its largest—the Great Wall station—able to pack in 80 researchers in the summer months. The base was not built until 1985, more than 80 years after Argentina established Antarctica's first base, on Laurie Island in 1904.

A Chinese leader on Tuesday urged international representatives to strike a "proper balance" between environmental and economic interests in Antarctica, as the frozen continent's vulnerability to climate change raises worries that some nations could seek to exploit its natural resources.
China is seeking to carve out a greater role in determining the continent's future while hosting delegates from more than two dozen nations that have agreed to an Antarctic protection treaty.
Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli—who sits on the Communist Party's all-powerful, seven-member Politburo Standing Committee—told participants that the fate of Antarctica's fragile environment bears on human survival.
