It's easy, I don't go shopping. Look at it this way, you go to work and earn money. You don't earn enough to pay for all the gifts you want to buy. You use a credit card. The bank gives the shopkeeper hard cash. You have goods that are already only worth 50% of what you took out a loan to buy, plus you have interest to pay on the debt. The bank makes money on the debt.
The gifts that you are giving people could have been bought after 25th December at a huge discount. Once those gifts are handed over someone unwraps it and says 'oooh, that's nice', and places it on a pile until you are gone. Within months the goods are either worthless, sold, or go in the garbage.
Shopkeeper gets a nice holiday paid for by you, the bank shareholders get a nice dividend, and you have to keep going to work to pay for someone else's life of plenty.
The power of advertising makes people defy all logic. I haven't bought or given gifts for 30 years, and people ask me how come I am never short of money...
