You are talking about an 'age' ago and those times will never return. About 4 years ago we need a young lad to work and learn from our engineer, on posting an ad. on a facebook page a young lad of 17 said that £1000 a month live in all found was a small amount of money.
The reason that the cost of living in the UK is high l feel is that laziness has entered almost all areas of society and what people, mainly women, did in around the mid 70's has caused much of this, it put many out of work too.

It's a case of innappropriate skills and unrealistic ambitions.
Anyway the cost of living is a problem for three main reasons: the few people wise enough to do the proper jobs are massively overpaid for doing them and nobody's now prepared to invest in retraining, there's a housing shortage, and wages and salaries are a failing mechanism to dsitribute wealth due to automation and globalisation(earning money doesn't make money, only having money makes money).
