I donated some of my college books Anna, most of my ex family went to same University ...I donated them in the name of my kid ...thought it was a nice gesture as she wont go there because of me lol! ...but people here, it´s amazing ...every time I go to throw my garbage find a bag of books...I´m a gypsy and still have tried to keep all my books for years ...not that I succeed but this is another story ....

I had many books - some of them 70-80 years old inherited from my grandparents - and I donated most of them to the local library. I did throw away some that were in very bad shape and the library didn't want them.

I still have plenty of books and I might donate more. I would probably never read most of them again anyway, while somebody else might enjoy them.

Hahahaha I mention books and the "genius loci" shows up wink Salve man of books! Hi Kattte!

.....like one from Edgar Allan Poe am I dreaming or what? really?

I try to keep all my books, even if I don´t like them (Dan Brown, E. L. James & Lucia Extebarria are my only 3 exceptions) but I understand there are preferences for so many reasons. Yeah I love to look around in those special mountains of old books usually on sale, old books no one wants, you may find treasures in there sometimes.... wave

Hi wave Maya

May I give you my address so you can donate some to me? hahahaha There is one tradition here in Barcelona maybe you like to know about: "In spring you will be able to take part in one of the most original celebrations in Catalonia - Sant Jordi. It is a very traditional festivity that combines culture and romanticism. That day, on 23 April, according to tradition couples exchange gifts: a book for the men and a rose for the women. Book and flower stalls are set up along the streets of Barcelona. They fill will people walking around stalls, looking for a gift for their beloved, and for their family and friends, too. You will be able to find the latest publications, see well-known artists signing copies of their books, and of course, smell the scent of the roses"

rose wine

The idea is to decorate the house with books and then sit around all day not reading them, and you can do one better with VHS cases designed to look like books - proof that our civilisation bottomed out culturally and intellectually long before its connection to the online world.

I personally believe we should gather all the copies of Twilight, Fifty Shades and Atlas Shrugged together and burn them on a great bonfire. Burn all the anti-intellectual works like fascism inverted.

All my books I bought from bouquinistes or old people who sell them in front of their houses at a symbolic price (cause they"d hate to throw them away).
They are not too many but carefully selected and exept the Russian and French classics I've never laid my eye on a book that everybody reads...

Cachuchi: Why some people throw books in the trash

@Cachuchi: ¡Hola nuevamente!

It seems like a kind of "sacrilege" to me... :-)
Well, maybe should think better (and no rush) to reach any worthy destination to "these fellows” (as many people here have said).

Of course that is possible to consider (err..) the exceptions by many reasons, but the image or idea of books in the trash etc. is still a little disturbing...

I don't like that either I always donate mine to either the Library or to the book club I have at work.

I only keep reference books, I dont bother with novels or fiction, I pass them on.

I get great satisfaction from finding a book at a garage sale etc., for somebody else.

Mainly I buy mostly magazines that have recipes in them and once I get through with them I toss them out.

Hopefully you live in a well built house, preferably with steel beams in the ceilings as I have read in a newspaper that on a few occasions someone's ceiling had collapsed in apt. buildings from the weight of thousands of books in the apartment above them. A few were in New York City...one person was found to have had several hundred stolen from the NYC Library...laugh What a mess those collapses must have been and the repairs must have taken several months...Not surprised though as I've seen some with only very narrow paths through the apartments, and houses, due to all the floor to ceiling stacks of books , magazines and newspapers....and god knows what else that may have entered, lived and died in those stacks...laugh
Yes I love books generally but only have collected certain types. I'd love to live in the Vatican Library, or even the the Huntington Library or the central Library in Paris ,Valencia, Berlin or some others. I have always envied those that can loot cities in a time of war...I'd always go for the art galleries and libraries first, then perhaps the banks...laugh Wars can teach one many lessons; for me one was ,be a pirate...laugh
