As a lone child l never played many games inside and remember playing in the street, my in house time would be in my Grandmothers dining room listening to the radio run by an accumulator and copying the music name as it was played, someone would draw a hopscotch and we would all use it, summer we played on the local playing fields and normally a Wednesday afternoon we would leave school to play cricket. My football prowess was as a goalkeeper where I saved a penalty.................................and let 10 other goals in, l should have been right back. in the dressing room.

In the street it was hide and seek, tin can tommy knob, stick and fuggle.

So, what did you do.

Not a game as such. I remember watching my dad shave his whiskers one day and I thought for a brief time after that, having whiskers was wasn't cool. Our cat strongly disagreed.

I was very lucky as a child, growing up in a small neighbourhood surrounded by the forest. Most of my time, I spent outdoors.... building tree forts, playing at the clay banks, catching critters out of the pond, riding my neighbor’s horse and endless hours in the stables brushing and grooming the horses and shovelling straw.
Indoors my time was spent alone in my room, doing arty farty stuff or watching tv.

I had a favourite place to hide in the woods, which required transversing a fallen tree over a ravine. But the prize of a successful crossing made it worth it..... a huge storm drain that hung over the clay cliff and I could sit inside, protected from the rain, and play solitaire for hours without fear of being found.

I am consciously grateful every day for the many blessings I have received this life.

Board games alone is not much fun so I had to do whatever made me happy, l had bikes and collected lots of bits and fooled around with them, at times in the summer a part time school teacher would allow me to use his small boat on the river.

We played bullrush on our lawn with the neighbours' kids.

Spent endless hours with my brothers crawling through tunnels in the haybarn.

Climbed countless trees....and fell numerous times.

Camped out overnight on our farm.

Played cowboys and indians (unPC now?)

Played hopscotch at school, elastic and jump-rope.

I was more a tomboy than a girly girl. I didn't have much appreciation for dolls and frilly things.

When we were inside we played board games....monopoly, draughts, chess, snakes n ladders and we had a family "ladder" for pool and table tennis in the games room(a converted double garage)

Enjoyed flying around in the paddocks on the farm motorbikes.

Ahhhh....the buzz of being a kid.

Were you comfortable to let your children do these things or would you consider them off limits now.

I guess I was fortunate as a kid Yubba. My parents were wonderful providers, and we had lots of opportunities to have fun growing up on a farm.

I think the world has gone safety-conscious mad these days. I certainly let my kids be kids, but they didn't have a luxury of living on a farm. The kids got involved in sports/hobbies more....yoga, athletics, swimming, jazz ballet for my daughter, soccer, netball, music....and by that time modern technology had caught up....and the internet was available with mobiles/ipods etc, unfortunately.

I am grateful for the upbringing I had...living in the country. I wished my kids had had similar.

As a kid we rode bikes around the neighborhood and had a few green apple wars with the kids on the next block. We played softball and wiffle ball and jump rope....a lot of jump rope. Also a game called 4 Square. I played Barbies alone, inside, and with friends on our big wrap around porch. We played board games sometimes too. We also played hospital. Some of us were Drs, ambulance drivers, patients, nurses. [ and no NOT "naughty" Doctor games].

Alone inside I played dolls, read a lot of books, kept a diary, baked in the kitchen and helped clean house and garden with my mom.writing sheep
