I remember when I was younger that you could tell what part of New York City a person came from by their accent. There was the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Hells Kitchen (Manhattan) accents. Also the Long Island accent. Yalies (people that went to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut) were taught to speak through their teeth.

Thankyou, Karl.

The city I grew up in was tiny and worked on the Australian model as it was described to me - three accents - the broad (local) accent, the milder version and Received Pronunciation.

Thinking about the capital city of Wales, UK Cardiff, where I have also lived, it occurred to me it's much the same, except for the many immigrant populations.

It then occurred to me that I've heard a fourth Australian accent through the media - the indigenous aboriginal version of Australian English.

Specifically, the film Rabbit Proof Fence comes to mind, the story of three sisters who successfully escaped an orphanage back to their mother during the period of, what would you call it? Ethnic cleansing?

I'm finding it rather profound that the description of accents in Australia related to me maybe 30 years ago ignored the indigenous population and it's taken me this long to fill in the dots.

Hello DeeDee.

Like yourself, I'm a fairly good mimick, or when in more serious conversation a verbal accommodater - the term academics use to describe speaking to someone in their own accent.

It's supposed to be a social skill, putting others at ease with acceptance and accommodation, or presumably, integrating yourself.

It's the only source of anguish I have with my increasing deafness. I'm finding it progressively more difficult to hear and mimick accents.

Belly inte-resting... As a child my father had me imitate all the various European languages and accents without ever knowing what I was saying...just the proper pronunciations and accents. By age 9 he started me on various geographic accents of the US...those were hilarious. He had me listen to speeches and I would practice by reading from various books until I was able to learn to speak Americanese as opposed to proper English. My mother thought it was all nuts . Years later I was told he was working for the CIA and by 14 I assumed he thought that one day I would too...HA! He finally gave up on that idea...laugh
I once met a man that had spent years roaming the mountains of Appalachia learning all the colloquial languages and accents from Maine to Arkansas. He was so good he could pin-point which contain they had come from...wow! Amazing talent. No, he didn't work for the CIA, in fact he became their target...sigh laugh

American accents are collateral damage to frequent in country migration and massive immigration without assimilation. But the main three areas of strong accents were New York/ New jersey, Boston, and the South. The western states never had much of an accent. Anyone that thinks southern accents are aggressive ain't never been to Queens, NY lol.

If you want a good variety of the way accents are now watch 'Orange is the new black" on Netflix.

Anyway to answer the OP, I have a Minnesotan accent, with heavy accent on the o.. wink
