It would depend on the context. Building work, a small mistake can cost the client or boss a lot of money, and so if it was my mistake I'd wear the friction up to a point. I'm OK with swearing, be prepared for some in return though, more than some usually. Physical contact would create all sorts of drama, thankfully its never been part of my work life.

Firstly, welcome to the forums, ru from Buffalo. wave

Thankyou for your responses everyone, they are very interesting and I'm still re-reading them and absorbing your various perspectives.

Even the facetious comments are interesting.

Innocentia, I like the distinction you've made between the power relationships and that you would consider responding to a colleague differently, than a superior.

Ru, I agree a physical action is a bit of a Pandora's box of a boundary to cross.

Someone distinguished between being on the receiving end of bullying and observing others being bullied. It confounds me that employees can watch bullying, put their heads down and say nothing. I kinda get it, but I don't quite get how doing the right thing doesn't override everything under these circumstances.

There is a distinction between receiving a serious telling off, which might or might not involve shouting, and being bullied.
Bullied is not a one-off, it's a pattern.
It takes time to recognise a pattern.
Before recognition one will watch and say nothing.
Once recognition is made it is a different story, one would hope so at least

I would take a minute for myself to calm down grin

Then depending on the reasons they shouted i would ask them not to do it again or i would be taking it further..that i would allow it to pass this time.

If someone, anyone hit me...then id remove my earrings and jewelry roll up my sleeves and return the favour.

(In all seriousness ive never hit anyone in my life, i would let them know, that i would be taking it further and wouldnt hestitate either).

jac_the_gripper: ...if a colleague, supervisor, or manager shouted at you, swore at you, or physically pushed you?

Shouted or swore, I would give it right back to them.

Pushed. If by a man, I would flatten his nose to his face.
