For a very brief period, I took down to my profile pic.
It was to do with some work I was doing. It would have been inappropriate for clients to have access to my private life via the Internet.
I didn't like it. I felt anonymous and less than engaging in open an honest interaction.
I was rather glad to be in a position where I could put my pic back up.

Haha yes obviously a choice. I'm almost certain no one is pressured into posting a pic on their profile.
I was hoping for more detailed conversation...
Privacy concern....shy....etc..things like that...and obviously answers from people with no photos will be more telling.

I don't like putting up pics at all and I'm not photogenic but I feel like guys like to see pics as is evident by my poll so I put it up :( That being said, I will never reply to a message of interest from someone without a pic unless its just a general message about something.

I'm less likely to respond to a letter without a picture. And even more less likely to respond positively. If I respond, it means that the letter is a lot -- I mean A lot -- above the average and that happens about once in a decade.
No picture means that the person is not willing to be accidentally identified by a passing by -- why? -- often because he's married / in a long-term relationship. (ca 35-40% of any dating site population are married, most of them are men).
Beside being physically disfigured - from birth or by an accident - there's no reason to hide your face.
Physically disfigured individuals have hard enough in the real life and I do understand their desire to remain "faceless" on a dating site, before they established some kind of a contact with another person. Beyond that - no excuse.
