I was thinking I'd like to be my dog or my son's fish 
Both are loved and well cared for but then I thought about all those pets that are neglected or treated cruelly
So maybe I would prefer to take my chances out in the wild and be a bird

I've spent way too much time with dogs.
I like going for walks, eating and sleeping. My sense of smell is so keen I sniff instead of checking use by dates. When I get stressed, I moult.
I don't make friends like they do though.

I chose bird because I thought it was safer than some furry critter who might end up as roadkill Or in a David Attenborough doco, far too graphic for my liking these days
