I understand several EU languages. It helps at work when patience in hospital needs translation and privately it helps to listen news from other countries and discover what's missing in your own stream media that they not telling you about it...

I only can speak English, but I've never had a problem in countries where they dont. Nearly everywhere, children learn English, but even where they dont- pointing, nodding and smiling is plenty.

Languages are good to know; because they help us communicate with people in thoughts they can understand, and broaden our understanding.

English and French were my first languages. I learned them both at the same time; and I learned Spanish pretty fluently beginning when I was 9 or 10.

It's been so long since I had anybody to talk to in French or Spanish; that I forgot most of them.

I can read Biblical Greek; but don't know anyone who I can talk to with it.

I took Japanese in school, hoping I'd meet a woman from the local Japanese school... I seem to have forgotten most of that.

I know a little Hawaiian... (and Tahitian: because the difference is usually just a "T" instead of a "K.") but, very few Hawaians speak fluent Hawaiian; so it's hard to find people to practice Hawaiian with; and I don't know any Tahitians...

I lived at a Filipino church for 18 years and learned a bit of Ilocano, which I haven't used for years...

These days, I'm just trying to remember the English I learned, and how to use it... which is why I'm posting here tonight.

I only speak English.

My mother thought it would confuse my sister and I if we were brought up in a bilingual household. I understand her concerns, but regret her decision.

I wonder if her decision also ran deeper. I have a sneaky feeling she could at one time speak Yiddish, but survival depended on only speaking German.

I was never very good at learning languages at school and I wonder if some of her unspoken fears rubbed off on me subliminally as a child.

It may be that aural learning is simply not my strong point. I've tried to pick up a little Welsh, but my deafness makes that an arduous task. I've only really managed to pick up stuff I've seen written down. I'm great with road signs. laugh

Languages, foreign, or otherwise, are taught in regular schools.

Here in Wales, some schools are Welsh medium and some are English medium, but Welsh and English are taught in both.

Once children get to secondary school at the age of 11 years, other European languages are also taught.

My native language is Serbian (and, of course, I understand Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin). I speak English, although still make plenty of mistakes, especially when I type/talk fast. I speak Japanese, but I'm far from proficient. I'm learning German at the moment.

I use English every day. Japanese changed my perspective of the world.

I think that speaking foreign languages allows you to meet people from different cultures and to learn about different values, so that you can reevaluate the ones you adopted in your own culture. wine
