Susanne1: I need asphalt, good tyres, and enough petrol in my bike. I'm low maintenance. But I will love my bike more than you.

This is also genetically defined, if you ask me :)

Tulefell: Congratulation with your new car. Especially so if you regard it as a success of your whole life.

Marconi has to do something with radio and Nobel with explosives. You made a joke, I didn't find it funny and chose not to comment that part.

As far as I can judge by the responses, I failed to explain what my question was about - must be language barrier. It wasn't about success or failure per se. It was about what make people to choose what they choose and continue to carry on despite that there's simpler paths. Where vision and perseverance come from? And why there's a lot of people - talented, young, ambitious - who choose to remain in the convenient lane. Who do what they are told to do.

Is it in genes?

Aren't you just the top of the bell curve...????

well it has nothing to do with language barrier or trying to be funny. but for sure with the intellect. Yours for sure, as you don't get "Marconi and dynamite" ! (physics and chemistry - Humans/ passion, drive, energy etc)

regarding your questions, they don't deserve an answer, as they too vague and stupid . (chicken/ egg,).

Btw, love my cars. .

tip hat

Not so much, but my bike doesn't argue back; and when I push the pedal or pull the lever, it does exactly what I want it to do. grin

Tulefell: Yes, and they can be brothers with only a couple of years apart. But it isn't about doing ok. It's about pursuing a success as you know it. Anyone in their teens ever dreamed about "doing ok"?

In my teens I wanted to become archaeologist. I'm a statistician now. I'm doing ok. Why didn't I choose differently? What makes that some people have more itch than the other? Is it possible to nurture likes Maurice Wilson or Robert Scott. How does one bring up a Philippe Petit?

Did you have the possibility (I do think you had the ability) to become an archaeologist? Some people don't have ambition. Not everyone that has ambition gets to the top (there are only so many top jobs).

I'm doing something different than what I wanted to do (and did) as a young adult. I like what I'm doing and it's going pretty well for me. If I had done this 15 year earlier I might have a good career at this stage. Not sure where it can get me but I'm happy with where I am now and simply, I have a life I like. This is more important to me than being a "high-flyer". I am ambitious but not enough to have work completely taking over my life (it sometimes does but it's not what I want on a continuous basis).

Did you think about changing your career later in life?

For some people success in their chosen job is the ultimate goal and if they are really getting somewhere, I do think it is often on the back of relationships, family life, friendships etc. For some people this is too big of a price to pay.

What do you need to rich your goal?

Happiness. Liking where I'm at at the moment. Once I'm happy everything else falls into place.

Well... was thinking about this one. Actually, yes. Everything else falls into place when you are happy.

What made you to pursue your goal that resulted in happinesses? Or did it just fall on your lap?

Sometime the ambitious have big ego with low self-esteem - the gnawing sense of inadequacy which keeps the battle for power and adoration raging on. And other people find their true calling in life.

My impression is that you know, like in "you sense", your true calling. You are born clamming your true calling in your teeth. The thing is that some, a tiny proportion of the population, pursue it no matter what. Through poverty, tears, pain, misery, agony...

And the rest, the solid "respectful" majority and opinion- makers, settles for "doing ok". Why?

Miwagi: I was just joking with you Tulefell, my humor must not be working very well today. I'm pretty old now and not to ambitious, but still searching for the meaning of life.

Well... meaning in the life is quite simple: to be happy. What makes one happy is another matter.

My thread was enquiring about why some people follow their call and some don't.

A joke or not: you do need a ladder or a firm hand or a handsome income in order to come far in this life. The thing is that there were / are people who made it without. And there is a rest of us, who didn't. Though some did have a "safety net" under.

Did you ever dreamed of "doing ok" in your teens?
