If you are referring to Registered Nurses, $32.00 per hour is currently on the very low scale. People cannot be expected to work for free. Charity hospitals still must employ paid staff. Would you say to a carpenter that he must build you a house from his own resources and time because you are low-income? How ridiculous would that be? It is the same thing. St. Jude's happens to be an extremely kind organization, and true to its word of no cost to client. Ms Thomas is an exceptionally caring individual. Please be considerate of those of us (I worked for a charity hospital for many years) who are sincerely trying to do the right thing. This whole medical billing is a ripoff and scam, 2 X-rays, 2-Prednisone pills and a breathing treatment that is stronger than I have at home and a ship load of tests I didn't need or want.....10.000.00. I couldn't breathe, and the doctor says it wasn't an Emergency, so my insurance refused to pay! But be an ILLEGAL or a DACA and you get it for free!!!

Too bad the US people got duped regarding the healthcare debate...allowing big business to gouge the citizens is incredulous...universal healthcare is a good idea and much cheaper...I would never go bankrupt due to an illness...nor would I have to sell my house...

Woodstock your heart is in the right place, I think there may be a misunderstanding about how a non profit organization works. A non profit doesn't mean there is no profit. It refers to what you must do with the money that you take in by donations . At a hospital for example, a doctor, nurse, cook, janitor, office staff, lights,gas. All of those expenses MUST be paid EXACTLY like any other business. What non profit refer to is the money that's left over after the expenses are paid. That's the money which goes towards what the business was set up to do.
Giving free health care, feeding the hungry, free housing, free clothing, or whatever.
In a a regular business that's the money that would be the owners profit, to be split among them, or reinvested into the business. A non profit can get money from other businesses , or the government. But that money comes with a lot of red tape, you must do what they tell you to, It their money you're using.

The problem with ER visits is that so many people simply can't or wont pay their bill so in order to balance the books they shift their debt onto those who con pay at extremely high rates. My son had a breathing problem and went to the ER for help they referred him to a throat specialist and gave him a checkout and some prescriptions. He had to have his tonsils removed. The ER bill came to $1400.00. for virtually nothing. He had to pay it or kiss his credit rating goodbye. The surgeons bill etc was about 3X higher.
BTW woodstock those Shriner ads are a joy to watch. I guess that is the plan right?
From a very young age I thought of life as living in a perfect vacuum, only instead of it trying to suck the air out of my lungs it was trying to suck dollars out of my pocket if I ever failed to keep it zipped up. I visualized living in a capsule in outer space, open the hatch and wooosh all your money gets sucked out never to be seen again.
