What's your definition of tolerance? ( Archived) (116)

Mar 1, 2018 10:06 AM CST What's your definition of tolerance?
lindsyjones: If I live in a country such as Muslim country andey ban that, I'd be tolerant. Their country their rule.
So, if they live here, my country which is predominantly Christian and prohibit me from observing or practicing my culture and tradition? Then I'd be so offended to be expected to be tolerant.

Tolerance work both ways.
In Germany Muslims are no longer allowed to wear their garb.

I think the issue here is not as much as tolerance as assimilation.

When I was in Sydney there was a big conflict about the Muslims contempt of bikinis and loose way of clothing by the non Muslim citizens, just as much as the white people complaining about the Muslims jihabs and spitting.

A big problem.

Muslims refusal to assimilate and live in an area where the majority are Muslims. Really bad.

mollybaby: After a few hundred years yeah. Not immediately. These things take time. And if the conditions/welcome isn't there to assimilate, then people are going to stay where they are welcomed, with their own.
Plus, it see,s to be easier to assimilate when you are white.

We have laws against discrimination. People are generally welcoming and friendly to new immigrants, no matter what the color of their skin. The Asians are some of the first to adopt the ways of their new country. They don't stay on benefits long at all.

rainbowdream2017: Lot's of muslims in western countries feels offended by Christmas,

I don't know how true that is. As far as my personal experience goes, I have been wished a merry Christmas by Muslims on a couple of occasions. I think a lot of people who push political correctness are responding more to their own imagination than to the sensibilities of minority groups.

People with their own agendas choose the most radical agendas of the opposite group, and state that is the agenda of the majority.

It never is.

Tolerance means to me by showing respect the other persons religious beliefs etc which do differ from my own.

It would be a pretty boring world if we all agreed the same way on everything.

Miwagi: Should you change your beliefs or values to be more accommodating to other cultures or religions?

No, changing would be demoralizing if a person doesn't want to change. Learning new things in other cultures and accepting is fine, religion is fine to learn about others religion, but if you change so that you can fit into someone's culture or religion to be with that person that's not being yourself. If you want to change for your benefit only that's one thing, otherwise, you will be miserable if you changed for someone else. Sounds like I am talking in circles. crazy All I know is I would have never changed religions or accepted their culture as my own. I lived with some people who didn't speak English and it was hard for myself and my three-year-old daughter, they lived a different lifestyle than we did, but I knew it wasn't going to be forever thank goodness. I did learn to make flour tortillas. grin

No! We own our values and beliefs, they are part of us. We can respect others values and beliefs without compromising our own!

Now that tolerance has been defined, do you think it should be extended to the forums as well as real life?

Because I know there are too many extremes on here.

The vast majority get on with most, but not everybody is going to get on with everybody.
