It's not fluffy snow. It's the driest, sandy snow I've ever seen.
It blows about exactly like sand does on a windy beach. It's mesmerising to watch. There are deep drifts in places, bare ground in others.
I was out and about yesterday with my granddaughter. You can't make snowballs, or snowmen out of it, anymore than you can sculpt dry sand, or fake snow.
I'm was very concerned about daughter working until 11pm tonight and being heavily pregnant. She had a choice either the 5 minute walk home, but we have no heating and two windows which won't close properly, or a 2 mile walk to her partner's house in the dark, at least - 5C with some fairly hefty winds. As it is, she's lucky enough to be working with a colleague whose mum, or dad will give her a lift to her partner's. Not that they can afford to use the heating much.
Fuel is so expensive, rents and utilities often exceeding people's earnings, so many, many people across Britain won't be able to afford to use their heating, even if they have it.
I'm sorry, I realise this was meant as a light hearted thread, but I think lots of people will be having a hard time right now and it's likely some are simply going to die.
A bit over 20 years ago I was sleeping rough. If they would have sectioned me because of severe weather they would have lit a fuse on a nuclear bomb. I find it very doggy grounds. While I do understand its reasoning and I can well imagine it being the best or only way forward for some it is so intrusive and insulting. And little understanding what hostels are like, some are insane hell holes. Rough sleeping is at times the better option.(even in this weather) And I don't think it was all done with the interest of the rough sleepers in mind but more with public opinion of not having a dead body in the morning. There's something important about being able to make a choice, having that freedom

Having said that ,,,, someone would have a death wish to stay out in that weather. I'm all for freedom of choice,, but some places were made up especially for the purpose of people having shelter from the extreme weather for a few days, they were well looked after , and nobody would be in danger from anyone in them. Personally i wouldn't like to see anyone out in this freezing weather, and i'm sure that the people catering for this bad few days ,,,, would either ,,,, i take your point though!
