Heaven, this is exactly why I do not engage in long distance relationships.
At least one of the couple must be willing and able to move permanently for it to work. And even then there is no guarantee.
As I am not in that position, and am not willing to do so either as I love living here, I cannot expect the other to give up their life either.
So, either be willing to give up your life as you know it, or give up LDRs.

Some people aren't that happy living where they are, they are happy to relocate and take the chance.

Having said that, they really would need to meet in advance. I know somebody who left their job; their home, and moved themselves, their pets, their mother (yes, their mother) and all their belongings to be with someone they had never met in real life.
It worked out....

I wouldn't leave to another country unless its very serious.....like engaged stage....I'm not quitting a stable job, leaving family and friends and a relaxed lifestyle for a relationship which can end anytime. The friends that had long distance relationships only moved after they were engaged or got married to the guy. I guess its up to the individual person. Long distance is damn hard.

Meeting a few times is very important..... having said that....a friend met a guy online, knew him for a few months, had never seen him other than in pics, he proposed, she went to his country they got married shortly after. Now they're still married all these years later and have a kid :) I feel sorry for that person you mentioned who left everything for a guy she never even met....that's crazy....sometimes love makes a person do stupid things....

Seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and then jumping through it - is too drastic and there within is a problem and its began due to an underlying problem for this notion to manifest.
Hanging around, having online friends, then friends in person, tours, holidays, partying, having fun...comes well, well, well before anything else.
