I only saw this mentioned on a tv program by Western women who were successful in their field conversing

I found it patronising as I've never had any doubt about my strengths, skills and talents as a woman, as well as those who surround me, hence don't require a special day to applaud my gender.

It should be aimed at women in impoverished countries who work far harder than us and have no voice or celebrity.

There is nothing really patronising in this day .. it's simply dedicated to celebrate women and women's rights, voices and their achievements.. to acknowledge and respect their role in the society..

A quote online says:
"There is no Mother's Day without them.
There is no Father's Day without them.
There is no Children's Day without them.
There will be no life without them.
Yes, today is the day to celebrate Women!"

Here is little bit of history:
While the first observance of a Women's Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York, March 8 was suggested by the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference to become an "International Woman's Day." After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there, but has lost all political context through the time, becoming simply a day to honor the women and feminine beauty. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

Mens day is completely out of the question, but if it ever does happen I'd like to see it include a pride march- for straight caucasian able-bodied men.
