My apologies, I had missed this one blushing

jono7: true story:
i had 30 grade eight art students wear tin foil hats with points...(yes, the movie 'signs' had just come out)
and we headed down to the open lobby of the school, with sketchpads and drawing boards.
i told them to act like nothing was happening, and just sit and draw, and wait for the reactions...

soooo..... i'm thinking i'll put a roll of tinfoil in my backpack and save it for True.

You sound like a better teacher than the one who expected Xerox copies of the pictures that she drew in her art class.

But, I never regretted dropping out of 8th grade...

thank you.
i first taught university level arts, then switched to high school as i thought they would have less finite ideas about what art is.
i had worked with so many students that at some point in their life, they had been told they weren't 'good artists'.
my philosophy of teaching art in high school primarily rested on creating a safe atmosphere so students felt safe enough to takes risks with their self expression, and i would then create assignment units using 11 intelligences so each student could use their strengths to create.

lets face it.... you can teach a monkey to draw if you break it into small enough steps. i'm more interested in helping a student discover, accept, and express.

but like you, i think many of us had less than satisfactory learning environments in the way back machine...lol.

If I knew upfront I would be stranded I would not go in the first place lol. But anyway I will make a list

Knife fixed blade
A folding knife
A sharpening device for the knifes and axe
Axe
Folding saw
Cordage preferably paracord
A storm proof lighter
A ferorod
A compass
Fishing hooks
Stainless steel water bottle
Stainless steel nesting cup
Mylar rescue blanket
A sail needle

With these items I can survive anywhere and make anything including toothpaste

CossackCat: If you knew you would be stranded on a deserted island for one month and could ONLY take a maximum of 15 items... what would you pack?

Note: Toothbrush & Toothpaste are 2 items

Toothpaste is better than gel; because the paste is made from silica clay, and that's something you'd want in your first aid kit.

And on a dessert island you should brush more often.

If I was on a deserted island for a month, with a limited number of resources, Cat, I DON'T think toothbrushes and toothpaste would be HIGH on my list of desired items! You've OBVIOUSLY never been in a survival situation! If I'm going back to the stone age, I'm gonna want some stone age stuff! And a BIG piece of flint would probably be HIGH on my list! But dental hygiene probably wouldn't make the cut. If it was a deserted island, I WOULDN'T be concerned about my breathe smelling, and there probably wouldn't be much candy available, to rot my teeth! I could go a month without brushing. I'd ALSO want a BIG steal knife. Since it's an island, presumably the waters around it will have fish, so fish hooks and/or a fishing net would be a nice addition. A good sturdy pair of boots would be helpful, in case I had to move inland for any reason. I'm not going to take the time to create a REAL list, Cat. But a toothbrush and toothpaste DEFINITELY wouldn't be on MY list of "supplies" I like to cook and eat too much. Speaking of which, some sort of shelter would be nice. But I can make my own shelter.

But you've obviously not done much camping, and NO survival training, Cat. doh comfort bouquet

I live on a deserted part of an island, miles from the highway.

I hiked into the wilderness with no food, no cooking utensils, and a book titled, Living With Nature in Hawaii; and lived there for years.

I lived outdoors most of my life, hiked the Appalachian Trail, and solo canoed over 5,000 miles, including the Mississippi River, the Gulf Coast, the Everglades, Florida Keys, the Atlantic Coast, and 3 of the Great Lakes.

Because I live offgrid on a deserted part of the island, I always have a Zippo stuffed with survival gear, and at least one Bic, a Swiss Army Knife and Leatherman anywhere I go.

This thread just about covers any 15 days of my life.

And I buy toothbrushes like I buy lighters, in large packs; so that I never have to worry about losing my only toothbrush.

Tooth brush and toothpaste was an example of being TWO items.

You obviously did NOT read my list of 15 items.

All you're wearing is a Mylar rescue blanket? With all that other stuff tied to your body using paracord?

After designing a set of clothes I could walk from Hawaii to Maine in...

I realized that Mylar blankets are for survival; and if you travel across country with nothing else, you're not likely to ever feel warm before noon.

Since this is a short vacation and not a survival situation where I'd be leaving food behind...

My #1 pick is a bedroll/pancho that will keep you comfortable wherever you're sleeping.

My #2 pick is a tarp to keep your hammock and bedroll dry, in case it rains for a month straight (which is common on the island where I live.

My #3 pick is a hammock to that you can tie under trucks, bridges, or in trees to keep you off the ground (even though I know how to allow centipedes and cane spiders to crawl across my face without slapping them like mosquitoes.).

I love double wide sleeping bags, tarps, and hammocks!

#4 Keen Sandals

#5 Fleece pants (keep you warm if they're wet.)

4.Swim shorts, so you can wash your pants in a laundry mat.

#5. Belt

#6. Swiss Army knife

#7.light fleece long sleeve shirt

#8 A hat

#9 A backpack( to haul your gear, and the food you find.)

#10 A water bottle

#11 A lighter

#12 Stainless steel cook pot

#13 Rope

# 14 Bag of rice.

#15 Bag of beans

I can sit out a storm for 15 days with those things in comfort, with a guest, no problem.

For a long survival situation, I'd probably trade the belt, beans, and rice for things to hunt and fish with; but I've kiiled a pig with rocks, and a trophy sized goat with a Leatherman.
