A good many CS people describe themselves as "not religious but spiritual". Anybody know what that means?

It generally means - believing in God (or something that transcends us), but having personal beliefs about it. Neither belonging to some religion, nor being an atheist/agnostic.

They`re not sure in which God or Gods to believe in, yet they are too scared to disbelieve... in case one day they come in front of the big Kahuna and he says Ta-da ,bend over uh oh

Thanks, Krinka, but that doesn't really describe what spirituality is. To me, it seems to be a case of believing things that are beyond the perception of our senses but there must be more to it than that.

Then you should open a thread "What is spirituality to you?". smile

I think that they gave that option for people who didn't want to say that they belong to some religion, but didn't want to say that they are atheists, either.

In the past, I used to choose "Orthodox Christian" (most Serbian people traditionally belong to this church) on similar sites and then was approached by people who were really seriously religious Orthodox (or some other) Christians. Since I'm not one, I've found this option better. smile

I think daniela might do it better than I could.

Krinka, I'm assuming you are Serbian and not a native English speaker. If that's the case, I have to say that your English is incredibly good.

Spiritualists, generally, don't have any identity, or religion to follow, so make up stuff in their heads as a way of justifying their existence .

That, and actually working on your own spiritual growth through some spiritual practices that exsist (New Age, Shamanism etc.), or following, reading, listening to some known spiritual teacher(s) -- there are many of them nowadays (intellectual, psychic, heart, body teachers....) who help on different levels and on different paths to the s. c."spiritual awakening" through things like understanding, meditation, grounding, cleansing, healing, prayer, mindfulness, yoga etc. That is, in my opinion and in very general terms, what nowadays is considered "spiritual but not religious"...angel

Well, I'm non-religious and Non-spiritual, but I believe in a soul and some of the Buddhist ways.

If ur non-religious, it means that u belong to NO RELIGION.

If ur spiritual, u still believe in Heaven and Hell, but u don't exactly call it that.

Still sorta religious, I would say, just not a specific religion.

Harbal: I don't know if that's necessarily true. I would have expected there to be some varieties of spirituality that didn't believe In Heaven and Hell, or their equivalent. Either way, I was more thinking if there was something that could be called the essence of spirituality that is common to all forms, rather than specific beliefs.

R u religious ?

Then u will know, according to u, what spirituality then is, not so ???

People in all different believe in Heaven and Hell, they just call it different names !!!
