TokyoRogue: It's my experience society isn't to blame for you not demanding the best for your self at all, you are! ...I eventually realized my delusion of being a victim to then demand the best for myself eventually kicking the junk and going on to develop the well rounded, charismatic, desirable individual I am today.
Society does permit you to demand the best for your self, you just need find the courage to understand it.
Excellent point and I thank you for replying!
Stories, that reveal another facet, help to connect us. They change us. I'm grateful you shared.
I understand the victimhood mentality. I was looking for explanations as to why people belittle themselves... I can't quite find the right words right now.... It's the idea that it's 'bad' to demand the best for yourself. Ideas?

What does this quote mean to you? How do you demand the best for yourself? Why?
And why does modern society not permit us to do this?
Similar to meeting the message of your quote:
I encourage others to create an “I love Me” mirror, which is actually inscribed into the top of the Mirror. On the bottom of the mirror is inscribed....
“Deep within me there is an infinite source of love, ideas, inspiration, creativity and purpose. I just need to have the courage to look within.”
If you say it often enough it will give you the courage to demand, of you, the best for yourself.....

To rise up and overcome tremendous odds, I believe he's talking about heroism. But I don't believe modern society has the oppression, misery or danger to permit a great many heroes. The age simply isn't dark enough.

Arrogance is the word that comes to mind. "Too highly" would be a comparison with another standard, be it higher or lower than the other party.
I'm pondering: Where is the balance between sacrifice, self-inflicted suffering (as taught in most religions) and the ability to enjoy 'the best' in life without feeling guilty?
Kaylana04: Epictetus was a Greek Stoic Philosopher c. AD 55-135.
What word would you suggest instead of "demand"?
Does it matter what I am going to replace the word "demand" with...?! I said what I think, no need to dig in a place where there's nothing hidden to be found...

To me it means to never settle for less. I demand the best by trying to be in the right place at the right time or informing myself on my options and how to get it. Why? Because I try to never settle for less if I can help it. This modern society does permit us to demand the best, just as long as we're willing to not settle for less.

i used to put messages on my bathroom mirror, and change them from time to time. i haven't for quite some time now.
last sharpie message was, 'i am'. after a few months, i cleaned it off. but i think it's a good idea. i learned it from 'mind valley' speaker.

hiya,
i'm not into 'demands' but i think one can easily realize Epictetus probably wasn't using modern english.
so i'm not into demands as they sound too much like ultimatums to me. i am into trying to be conscious, observe, and be respectful and accepting of myself and others. i don't always get what i want...but i have been having an amazing, very blessed life.
having said that.... i do want a deck...., and some new furniture, and...and...and...
