Your attempt to trivialize their compassion only shows how little of it you have within you. A dedicated rescuer does more good in a typical week than you have probably done in your entire empty life.

I'm also an animal-rescue volunteer. I'm anything but a hag. I've helped rescue thousands of animals, a fair number of dogs, but mostly cats, most of whom would have died without my intervention. Woe be to anyone who tries to harm an innocent animal in my presence. You are a coward, and a textbook example of why dogs and cats are better than humans.
