britishcolumbian: It feels like ever since news broke last autumn of Prince Harry’s relationship with Suits star Meghan Markle, rumours of an engagement have been bubbling along, hitting fever pitch late last week when British bookmakers suspended betting on the impending announcement. Earlier this morning, Clarence House confirmed what we’ve suspected for a really (really) long time: a royal wedding will take place in Spring 2018.

Per the official announcement, ‘further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.’ While we’ll doubtless know little about the couple’s guest list until the day itself (will Meghan return the favour and invite Serena Williams along for the ride?), it remains unclear whether Harry’s grandmother will be attending the ceremony.

So, why might the Queen be forced to skip her grandson’s wedding? As Queen of England, Elizabeth II is also the Head of the Church of England, Defender of the Faith or fidei defensatrix to give her the correct Latin title (but if you’re up-to-date on The Crown, you’ll know this already…) So, she stands for the Church, its values and – by extension – its views on divorce. Meghan’s previous marriage (to TV producer Trevor Engelson, whom she divorced in 2013) makes things rather more complicated. To use another Crown allusion, think back to Wallis Simpson and the Duke of Windsor, or Princess Margaret and Peter Townsend: these days, the royals are arguably more liberal in their attitudes, but the Queen still takes her duty as Defender of the Faith very seriously.

Who is Meghan Markle and who are her parents?
The 36-year-old star was born and raised in California but until recently lived in Toronto, Canada, where the TV show Suits is filmed.

When she was little, Meghan spent a lot of time on the set of US TV show Married... with Children because her dad was a photography director on it.

Meghan was "discovered" at a party but while her career was starting out she worked as a freelance calligrapher.

Meghan's mother, Doria Radlan, is a yoga instructor and social worker. Her father, Thomas W Markle, won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction for a Drama Series.

Doria is African-American, while Meghan's father is Dutch-Irish, and the family were victims of racial abuse when Meghan was younger.
Are you kidding? (think Henry VIII). Edward may have been able to keep the throne had he been a more aggressive man. He was very weak, very pliable, and caved in to pressure. JMO

britishcolumbian: Read the first part of why the queen can not even attend the wedding of her grandson.
Megan has been divorced well so has Charles in the biggest scandel ever.
So he could still be King?
By moral values he shouldn't.

The succession has nothing to do with the monarch's wish. It runs purely through the male line of children, then the female line until they all are dead. It then shifts to the nearest of kin in the same form. Like it or not Prince Charles is the next king. The tricky part is his current wife, just as Simpson was for that king. If there is sufficient outcry over Camilla he may decline. Then Charles oldest son becomes king, no if's or but. As for the Church, it has moved so far as to ordain homosexuals that opposing the divorced would be half-hearted.

Almost right, but the title goes to the first born not the first male, this was changed a few years ago.
Not a problem about Camilla, as they were married before Charles becomes King, but unlikely she will have the title Queen, most likely Duchess of Wales. Collectively they will be Their Royal Highnesses.

Who cares about the King?

I just want the topless Princess who doesn't wear panties to rule the British empire, and I can hardly wait to see those pictures on their coins.

Everyone will want one; and they'll be the default coins for starting games...

"Heads or tails!"

My understanding is that Charles has the prerogative to name her Queen should he so choose. Otherwise, she will be The Duchess of Cornwall. The Duchess of Wales is reserved for the wife of a crown prince, not a consort of a king. (according to a short little old lady rummaging through the dusty books in the college library!laugh )
