It makes people more cliquey and less likely to be themselves. Which isn't to say people are particularly unique but it makes them less unique if you could imagine that. People become the equivalent of the diner who has to know what everyone else is having before they "decide" what to order. Thumbs up and thumbs down are basically pissing all over self-confidence.

Now I know "if you've got something to say you can say it to my face" is impossible online but I regard like and dislike as the total opposite of saying something to your face. It's treating people like they're an indecisive weasel.
