I usually tip return to and bar people 20%. Should I tip more, or less?

I tip about 10% to 15% depending on the service. Here it is seen as a lot. Most tip less.

I think expected tipping is wrong, the whole point of tipping was to show appreciation for a job well done, but now some use tipping to supplement paying low wages, and many just expect to receive a tip just for doing their job.
Thankfully tipping in China is rare and never expected.

I always heard TIP stood for "to insure promptness". But I don't really like having to pay the owners' employees for them. I also know some of the owners of the Mexican restaurants keep the tips for themselves. How do you feel about tipping at places who ring up no sale when they see cash come out?
I see this a lot at the Mexican and Chinese restaurants here in my town. And do you tip at a buffet when all they bring is water?

Interesting, I have not used cash for food purchases at a restaurant in a long time. I seldom ask for receipts since my banks immediately send me text messsages for every debit from my accounts.
I’ll have to try using cash at my favorite Mexican and Chinese restaurants and request a receipt.
I don’t do buffets anymore either. Around here, they are too dirty, too crowded too noisy and too many kids running around in them.

What you have to do is go ahead and pay them and then ask for a receipt. Most will just get out a receit
book and write out a hand written one. It's rampant in our town. It sort of pisses me off, but it is so easy to do who can blame them. I've noticed some have taken to putting the resister down below eye level so you can't see the total on the register/cash drawer. Of course this works better in a owner run restaurant.
I don't do buffets either and I don't see the need to tip anyway, but I know some of the employees are not being paid much.

Yes I believe in tipping. I go cow tipping every chance I get. beer

All kidding aside, I do tip and the amount varies depending on the service. Here in South Carolina Restaurants only have to pay $2.35 an hour, unless the tips received don't bring the hourly amount up to at least minimum wage, then the employer has to make up the difference.
I usually go out with friends after Church on Sundays and around here there are a lot of places that have Sunday buffets so that's what we usually have. I usually tip there to but not always, again it depends on the service.

My usual tip is twenty percent. But I also take things into consideration. Really bad service and I am not talking about cooking I am talking about service that the waiter or waitress is responsible for I will knock it down to 15 or 18 percent. I have thought about starting a web page geared towards women who dine alone sigh some must be thinking tip because I have received some shabby service at times blues at least the bad is far and few. Now since I do dine alone if I go in a restaurant and I see they are really busy and I know me sitting in that table is kind of like renting it. They could be making a much better tip if two were sitting there. I take that into consideration and give a little more than the twenty percent. If the service is good. I have a co worker who is like me and eats out and don't mind going alone. We went to an upscale place the other evening and the girl went out of her way to make our visit a happy one. And most do at that particular place because it is one we frequent. So I must be tipping appropriately. I work hard for my money so I don't just throw it away. But I am also respectful of other people till they give me a reason not to be. Just how I am and it seems to work well for me.

I ask who gets the tip first.

If the owners keep it, I don't tip.

If the person who served me, or it's shared amongst the service staff, I tip well.

The last time I took my granddaughter out, the two youngsters who made a lovely fuss of her and who didn't mind that we couldn't finish a kid's meal between us, we're thrilled to bits with the couple of quid I tipped.

I couldn't help thinking they were a little bit tip deprived. It doesn't take much to make someone's day special, either as a service provider, or customer.

Tipping? What a ghastly custom. Thank heavens we don't do it in my country. It must be a nightmare for you Americans.
