During the course of my work in mental health, I've become fascinated by hoarding disorder conversing

So far, I've discovered that it's often associated with people who live with schizophrenia, depression or can be a disorder completely within itself conversing

Does anyone have any information to share with me on this? handshake

One of the first signs of a mental disorder....
is a fascination/preoccupation with mental disorders. For example... trying to understand why the mental person of your fascination hoards stuff.

Mental people can't be cured, they can only be medicated.

So what's it tonight serene... red pill or purple one?

confused

Mental illness is about recovery, meaning that those who live with it can, with support, live a meaningful life.

It is not all about medication, that is just a part of the equation.

It becomes obsessive with people to the point where everyday life is completely took over by it. People resort to it for different reasons whether genetic or environmental.

Yes and it can be very distressing for them conversing

Such a sensitive issue, it needs to be approached with insight and empathy, with support from a clinical psychologist conversing

A vastly unaddressed issue in this country and most likely many others I suspect confused

It has been unaddressed but the TV show "Hoarding - Buried Alive" really gives a glimpse into the mindset of the mentally ill. That said, this series cashes in on the illnesses of some people.sad flower

There is an epidemic of young people committing suicide in Ireland. sigh

I have seen how eating disorders affect mental health in young people in my own family.

No easy answers and it is worryingly that people looking for help can't get access as it is not there or has a long waiting list (in Ireland).

I also know of some people who live close to me who are hoarders and see how they live. It's just so sad and the suffering they are going through mentally and how depressed they seem to be.

Mental health is seriously underfunded in this country also conversing

In terms of the hoarding issue, a program was put in place sometime ago in the organisation I work with but sadly the funds dried up.

There's definitely a need for it but I've not been able to find any services in my State, let alone the region I work in.

It just has so many consequences for the individual who hoards, psychological distress being one of course conversing

In addition, many face the threat of eviction, particularly when it comes to public housing/rental properties where the concern is around safety, fire hazards, vermin infestation, etc etc

So then they are faced with the overwhelming thought that all their 'stuff' will be removed which may solve the problem for the property owner but obviously doesn't address the mental health issue which in turn means the collecting will most likely continue.

I don't know anything from a professional basis, but it seems to be linked to depression.
There is often a trigger point, like a death or other traumatic event, which seems to set it off.

Hi johnjim

Yes I understand what you're saying there but when clutter gets to the stage where it seriously impacts on someone's life yet they feel they are unable to stop acquiring, or don't want to, that's another story.

In addition, there may be other people living in the house, family members, children, whose living conditions can also become intolerable conversing

Molly yeah in spending time with a lady I work with, it appears that much of her life has involved loss - she lived in a hostel far from her parents in the country for education purposes; the business run by her husband and herself went bust, resulting in the loss of their home; her marriage came to an end and her adult children are estranged.

She lives alone with her adorable Jack Russell, the pair of them surrounded by all sorts of things piled up to the ceiling and on every surface.

Usually the actual physical act of clearing, if they will do it, also clears the brain.

It's so complex conversing and a clinical psychologist should probably be involved conversing

I took one of my ladies who is affected by this condition out for coffee yesterday, during the course of our chat I felt comfortable in asking when she felt her acquiring first began

She immediately said it was when her marriage broke down
